Zurich airport-Weggis with Tell-Pass: need Zurich-Zug ticket only?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning to arrive at Zurich Airport on the morning of August 25 and wants to get to their hotel in Weggis. They are unsure if they should buy a point-to-point train ticket from Zurich Airport to Zug and then use the Tell Pass to reach Lucerne and Weggis, seeking confirmation on this travel method.

Key takeaways:
  • Buy a point-to-point train ticket from Zurich Airport to Zug, which continues on to Lucerne, as this method ensures you're covered for the trip.
  • You can catch the IR13 train at 11:38 AM from Zurich Airport to Zurich Hauptbahnhof and transfer to the IR70 to Luzern.
  • Check the timetable for your travel dates as some trains also pass through Baar, allowing you to use the Tell Pass from there.

We arrive at Zurich Airport morning of 8/25 and need to get to our hotel in Weggis.  We want to take the train to Lucerne and then the boat to Weggis from Lucerne.

Is the right approach to buy a point-to-point train ticket from Zurich Airport to Zug on a train line that continues on to Lucerne(like the IR75) so we are covered for that portion of the trip and then are able to use the Tell Pass as our ticket for the remaining distance to Lucerne?

The leg from Zurich Airport to Zug is not covered by the Tell Pass, which is my understanding.

Looking for help or confirmation that this is the right approach to do this or if there is some other ticket/travel method we should use.

I believe the key for us is to buy a train ticket from Zurich Airport on a train that goes through Zug and continues on to Lucerne.

Thanks for any help/advice.  I am sure this is the 1st of numerous questions as I work through the itinerary details of our Zurich-Weggis-Wengen 10-day itinerary.

    Hello Vitukas

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thank you for your question.  And thank you for the way you presented your question.  You are in effect saying,  ‘This is what I think I should be doing.  Have I got it right?’   Questions asked in this way make it easier for us to give you answers!

Yes, you have got things right!  In particular you are right when you say ‘I believe the key for us is to buy a train ticket from Zurich Airport on a train that goes through Zug and continues on to Lucerne.’  (One thing to note is that the German language name for Lucerne is ‘LUZERN’.  You will see ‘Luzern’ on train departure boards and on the trains themselves.)

Here is an example of a schedule you might want to follow.  You do not say exactly when you are due to arrive at Zurich Airport, but let us suppose that you are through immigration and customs by 11 20.
Zurich Airport Railway station is directly underneath the main terminal building.  Catch the 11 38 IR13 train bound for Zurich Hauptbahnhof.  This train will reach the Hauptbahnhof at 11 51.  But do not get off!  The train now becomes the 12 10 IR70 train to Luzern via Zug, arriving Luzern at 12 51.  Walk straight out of the front of the station.  The boat landing stage is straight in front of you, just the other side of the bus station.  The boats to Weggis are hourly and leave at 12 minutes past each hour and take 40 minutes.

In your thread you refer to IR75 trains.  These leave Zurich Airport at 15 minutes past each hour and run through to Luzern via Zurich Hauptbahnhof and Zug, taking 70 minutes.  That would give you 47 minutes to wait for the boat to Weggis.

Please feel free to ask your further ‘numerous questions’!

    Very best wishes

    Roger

    Hi vitukas,

Just to add to Roger’s helpful reply.  In the event you do not take the train per Roger’s example, some trains also pass through Baar.  If this is the case, you would only need to purchase a ticket Zurich airport-Baar.  Thereon, after Baar your Tell-Pass would kick in.

Research your train journey with the Swiss timetable:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

I recommend that you download and take a look at the Tell-Pass coverage map in the below link so you can familiarize yourself.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda
