Hi dhruba30,

You have picked destinations all across the country, which means you would travel to a different town every day. It's not possible to include everything on your list in 4 days, but here's a suggestion for you to look into:

  1. Travel to Chur;
  2. Bernina Express: travel to Tirano, then to Lugano;
  3. Travel to Zermatt;
  4. Travel to Lucerne via Interlaken (the Golden Pass line), and finally to Zurich.

Please see the links above for more information and hotel suggestions, and see this planning page to create a detailed itinerary.

A 4-day Swiss Travel Pass suits your plans. Please see here for prices and here for extra discounts. You can book the Bernina Express seat reservations while purchasing the pass.

Dear Annika,

Thanks for your advise. With having your suggestion whether the following plan can also be possible?

1. Zurich to Lugano via Chur and Tirano.

2. Lugano to Interlaken by train.

3. Interlaken to Jangfrau and later to Lucerne.

4. Lucerne to Zurich.

You can plan it yourself at:

Without having looked into details, Tirano might be an issue. OTOH, there may be a bus between Tirano and Locarno or Lugano. That would be a long day.

Why not simply go from Chur to Lugano directly?

Step 2 should be OK.

Step 3 will be a long day, but not impossible.

Step 4 is 45 minutes to one hour.

Hello dhrhuba30,

Zurich to Lugano via Chur and Tirano is possible in one day, but it's a long trip. Whether it's too long is for you to decide. Be sure to take the official Bernina Express to keep the number of changes limited so the trip is more comfortable.

Your schedule for that day would be like this:

  • Zurich dep. 7:07 AM
  • Chur arr. 8:22 AM
  • Chur dep. 8:32 AM (Bernina Express train)
  • Tirano arr. 12:45 PM
  • Tirano dep. 2:20 PM (Bernina Express bus)
  • Lugano arr. 5:30 PM

As Annika explained, all of this is free with the Swiss Travel Pass, but you need to book seats for the Bernina Express. Since you live in India you can arrange for all of that on raileurope.co.in/ pass/swiss-pass.

The other days in your plan look fine to me.

Hi dhruba30,

You don't need to book tickets in advance. Just go to the rail station on a good weather day, show your Swiss Travel Pass, and buy the tickets. Only in mid Summer it may occasionally be crowded enough to pre book tickets. Please see here and here for details. Of course you can decide to book tickets a few days ahead of time once you're in Switzerland. But you need to be sure about the weather.
