Hi friends! My family of 5 and I will be in Zurich on June 7th for the afternoon and evening before we leave the following day. What are some must sees in Zurich for our short time there? I have two or three things down on our list like Niederdorf, Lake Zurich, Grossmunster, and St Peter. Are these places worth the time or are there other places for our family (ages 65 to 6) to focus on? Thanks so much for your help!

Hi mcduncan05,

you won't have much time for anything else with what you've got on your list I think. A lake cruise is always a good idea on a nice afternoon: www.myswissalps.com/bo atlakezurich

Great museums in town if that's any interest and also a great Zoo. Walking/exploring the downtown core and a lake cruise would fill your afternoon/evening though. www.myswissalps.com/zu rich

Thank you sir. Are the things I have on my itinerary worth the visit or is there something else I should see aside from those? Thanks!

Hello mcduncan05,

I would also suggest you do exactly what you say, Zurich Old Town, Lake Zurich and boat cruise. You can reach the lake walking through the old town (Niederdorf) in a max. of 30 mins.

Or

You can look into guided half-day tours from Zurich, e.g.
- Zurich and Surroundings city tour (one of my favourites for the area)
- Rhine Falls and Stein am Rhein tour

Hope this is helpful. Enjoy your stay.

Best,
Steph

Hi Mcduncan05 -

It is very hard to say what is worth it unless you give us some ideas of your interests.

I could, for example, design an itinerary of art museums and a high end and expensive restaurant that would appeal to some of my friends. For them , and for me, it would be more than worth it. For you?

What makes something "worth it" for you?

Thank you Luke and Steph! We are looking at doing the Rhine either the day of arrival into Zurich before we head out or that day we stay in Zurich before leaving. I will add the Cafe to our list of places to try.

Slowpoke, high end restaurants and art museums aren’t something my 6 year old would handle very well, neither are art museums. But thanks.

Good. Now we know some things that are not "worth it." Any things that particularly interest you?

Here are some things that might be "worth it" for a six year old.

A six year old might like the Zeughauskeller, because of the atmosphere.......hard to say what is in the mind of a 6pyear old, except that they seem to get bored with scenery pretty fast. They have a couple of dozen kinds of sausages....can't remember if that includes hotdogs:

www.zeughauskeller.ch/ home

I tried to find their menu, and was reminded that I wanted "the card"; die Karte or die Speisekart - the food card. When I ran into a "menu" it was used in the normal style for Switzerland.....it was a special meal for the day or the month. A search with Google will turn up lots of pictures. I could not find the full menu; I only got fractions of pages.

A traditional and famous sausage stand is at Bellevue ( the name of a tram stop) not far from the NIederdorf:

www.sternengrill.ch/

It is right at the Bellevue tram stop.

Now they have reopened a restaurant, up stairs, too.

My 8 year old granddaughter loved riding on the upper decks of the common double-decker trains, and actually, spent a significant portion of her time looking out. Not that the electronic thing in her hand was ever out of sight for long.

Maybe a short ride on one of the boats that start at the Landesmuseum in Zürich would be interesting.

www.zuerich.com/en/vis it/attractions/limmat-river-cruise

That site links to Google Maps, whch shows " Ferry terminals" if you look along the shore line.

www.google.ch/maps/dir /47.3689693,8.5427476/ Limmat-Schifffahrt,+Schiffste g+B%C3%BCrkliplatz,+Z% C3%BCrich,+Switzerland /@47.378979,8.5411998, 19z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m0! 1m5!1m1!1s0x479aa75531 4a8e57:0xc20642b21b173 0a5!2m2!1d8.5421825!2d 47.3661882

I did not find a map showing the exact route.

But, you can get on at the Landesmuseum stop and ride as far as Bürkliplatz,

www.google.ch/maps/dir /47.3689693,8.5427476/ Limmat-Schifffahrt,+Schiffste g+B%C3%BCrkliplatz,+Z% C3%BCrich,+Switzerland /@47.3661078,8.5399446 ,19z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m0 !1m5!1m1!1s0x479aa7553 14a8e57:0xc20642b21b17 30a5!2m2!1d8.5421825!2 d47.3661882

or out onto the lake to Zürichhorn where the casino is. You can get on and of at several places, including one for the Niederdorf near the Rathausbrücke, called Zürich Limmatquai.

The zoo is small but nice, a short walk from the end of the number 6 tram line, on the Zürichberg up above the city.

Will you be in Luzern? Attached is a page from a photobook that I made to document our trip. The Lion fascinated her.
