Hi, we (4 of us) have planned a 13days trip in Switzerland from 17 to 30 May. Tickets booked. From 17-20th we will be in Lucerne, plan to visit Mt Pilatus, boat cruise Lake Luzern, Weggis,Mt Rigi, Burgenstock, Mt Titlis. 21st-22nd will be to Zermatt for Matterhorn & Gornergrat. 23rd to Lausanne. 24-27th will be visiting Harder Kulm, Jungfrau, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Schilthorn, Wengen, Murren, Thun. 28th in Bern. We have yet to plan any itinerary on 29th, maybe we will stay in Zurich as we will be flying home on 30th. We read that the cable cars are closed in Lucern till 18th May. 17th we can do a city tour but on 18th, are the cable car to Mt Titlis or Mt Rigi close as well? How about the cable car or cog wheel to Jungfrau, Grindelwald & Lauterbrunnen ? When will they reopen ? Really hope we don’t have to skip any of these places. Are we trying to squeeze too much into our 13 days ? If u feel we are spending too many or few days in any of these places , we welcome your advice. Thanks.

Hi Alarice, and welcome to MySwissAlps,

For cable car maintenance see: http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/gondolarail-access-to-mountains-in-aprilmay-2018.

The cable cars to Mt. Titlis and Mt. Rigi are operating. Jungfraujoch isn’t a problem either.

I don’t think your squeezing in too much. You put a lot of weight in terms of days on Lucerne and the Jungfrau region which I think is the right thing to do. I’m just wondering about the order of your trip. You might have a scenic train trip in mind when traveling to Zermatt and then back to the Jungfrau region via Lausanne?

If you work out your itinerary in more detail, you can share it back with us so we can give you better feedback.

Are you traveling by train? Have you decided on a rail pass? You might want to read how to choose the best rail pass.

    Hi Chantal,

Thanks for your prompt response. We are happy as long as we can get up the various mountains.

    Our itinerary :

we will stay in Lucerne from 17-20May.

May 17- Train from Zurich to Lucerne. Visit old town Lucerne & Chapel Bridge.

May 18-Lucerne cruise to Weggis then to Mt Rigi & Vitznau then cruise back to Lucerne. Once we reach Lucerne, we will cruise again to Burgenstock then funicular to the top & down. We also want to try the luge at Burgenstock.

Are we able to complete all these within the day? Is the luge available?

May 19- Lucerne cruise to Alpnachstad then cog wheel to Pilatus, take cable car down to Frakmuntegg & change to gondola to Kriens.

If cog wheel is closed, we will take cable car up & down from Kriens. Or are there any better alternatives?

May 20- Lucerne to Engelberg then cable car to Mt Titlis.

We will stay in Zermatt from 21-23May.

May 21- Train from Lucerne to Zermatt . City walk in Zermatt.

May 22- Zermatt to Klein Matterhorn

    May 23- Zermatt to Gornergrat

We are thinking of staying in 6 days in Berner Oberland from 24-29 May instead of the Initial plan of 4 days in Lauterbrunnen, 1 day in Lausanne & 1 day in Bern.

If we are using Berner Oberland as our base, is Lauterbrunnen a good base to Lausanne & Bern? Interlaken is too city for our liking. Any better alternative to stay ? We prefer country side but yet easy accessibility to transport & not too many connections involved.

May 24 – Train from Zermatt to Interlaken then Lauterbrunnen. If We have time, will visit Harder Kulm.

    May 25- Lauterbrunnen to Lausanne

    May 26- Jungfrau

May 27- Lauterbrunnen cable car to Murren, Schilthorn , Stechelberg, then hike 90min back to Lauterbrunnen.

    is Hiking possible ?

May 28- Lauterbrunnen train to Wengen, cable car to Mannlichen & Grindelwald.

May 29 – Lauterbrunnen to Bern

May 30- Lauterbrunnen to Zurich. Our Flight Is about 11pm. Is there any place for luggage storage In Zurich ? so we can explore Zurich without our luggages. we should have 3-4 big luggages.

We are buying 15 days Swiss Travel Pass but we are not sure how to fit in any scenic train ride in our iitinerary. Appreciate any suggestions.

We have yet to book our accommodation, so we are flexible with our plan to suit better alternative arrangements.

    Thanks Again for your help.

    Hi Alarice,

You can use the Swiss railways timetable to plan out your trips – it is a personal decision whether you can/want do multiple trips in one day.

    1. I’m not sure I’ve heard of a luge or similar at Bürgenstock?
    2. No other alternatives to Pilatus no. Either the cogwheel from Alpnachstad or the cable cars from Kriens.
    3. Yes I think Lauterbrunnen is the best combination of Alpine village with good transport links.
    4. Hiking from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen? Yes certainly that is fine. It is a level walk between the two towns on the valley floor.
    5. You should be able to do some other hiking by late May in the Jungfrau Region – the lower the elevation the better. You’ll have to check with the local tourism office when you arrive to see what is open.
    6. It depends on how big your luggage is. There are lockers at Zurich main train station that can fit most bags. For sure you can leave them at the left luggage office at Zurich airport (15 minutes by train from Zurich main station.
    7. I would leave Zermatt for the end of your itinerary. From Lucerne go first to Lauterbrunnen. From Zermatt you can take the Glacier Express train to Chur (8 hours) and then a train that day or the next to Zurich (about 1.5 hours).
