This is our first trip to Switzerland and we are very excited, there are 4 of us staying in Grindlewald Romantik Swaiserhof resort from January 20-25.
I wanted to find out about what Rail ticket/pass I should purchase.
Also should we pre-purchase our Jungfraujoch train trip tickets?
Also very interested in any other local Gondola type mountain lifts or excursions that we could do while in Grindlewald. I very much appreciate all feedback.

Hi Ronnie and welcome to MySwissAlps!
To know which Swiss rail pass (if any) will save you the most money on your trip, you’ll have to first decide on your day to day itinerary.
Once you’ve got a rough itinerary set you’ll need to find regular ticket prices for your trips, and then compare those prices to a rail pass’s offered discounts (and its own purchase price). Rail passes can cover between 25% and 100% of a ticket’s cost for a particular route.
The following link gives you instructions on how to find prices and compare various rail passes http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass (we even have a spreadsheet there to help with the math).
Do you mean the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof?
For our recommended activities around Grindelwald have a look here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gr indelwald/activities – tickets for mountain trips do not need to be pre-bought but can be: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch/tickets

Removed userParticipant72625 posts12 December 2018 at 19:00:32 #900284Also Lucas, wouldn’t the 4 day Jungfraujoch Hiking and Sledging rail pass be an option for us if we were staying in the Grindlewald area? Would cover all types of trains and gondolas in the area and lo0ks like there is more than we could do in 4 days in that area.

Yes, the Jungfrau Hiking and Sledging Pass could also work if you stay within the Jungfrau region. See here for coverage details if you haven’t seen that yet: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauhikingsledgingpa ss/validity
It won’t cover your trip from the airport to Interlaken (and back again) so there is that price to take into account but it may be worth it in the end. The only way to know is to finalize your daily itinerary and do the math.
If you don’t want to do the math at this point it is probably a safe bet to get a 4 day Jungfrau H&S Pass and then buy point to point tickets to/from your airport on days 1 and 6 (assuming that is all you have planned those days for travel).
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts12 December 2018 at 20:00:09 #900286If you choose the Jungfrau H&S Pass, the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass and bit.ly/2rkekat) may prove cost effective for the Zurich to Grindelwald and return trips.
Don’t pre-purchase Jungfraujoch tickets. Just pick the best weather day to do that excursion.
Removed userParticipant72625 posts12 December 2018 at 20:21:20 #900287again many thanks Lucas. The best I can tell is the cost for 4 Adults for 4 consecutive days would be $220.00 usd each. And this pass will allow free access to all the railways on the map shown, including the trip up to Jungfraujoch. If you could confirm that then I think we will prepurchase these for us 4.
we can then pick the day we want to do each Mountain Rail trip correct? No need to pre-book our seat or anything?
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts12 December 2018 at 20:37:24 #900288Only the solid red lines on the H&S map are “free” routes. The dotted Eigergleischter to Jungfraujoch route, for example is 50% discount.
Removed userParticipant72625 posts13 December 2018 at 0:21:58 #900289Got it and again thanks. So with the Hiking Pass we will need to pay a discounted rate for the Jungfrau trip and the Gondola trip from Wenger to Grindlewald correct? Also since we will be purchasing this Hiking and Sledging pass i see that we will be able to Sledge for free anywhere near.
Can you recommend any good Sledging ideas or trails close by for 4 folks that are 50+ years old??
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts13 December 2018 at 0:56:51 #900290The cableways Wengen to Mannlichen and Mannlichen to Grindelwald are free with H&S Pass. Sorry I’m not familiar with the sledging opportunities. Someone will be along shortly to help with that part of your question.
ArnoModerator15484 posts13 December 2018 at 6:08:55 #900291Hi Ronnie,
This page links to the maps showing sledge runs and winter trails in the First and Männlichen areas: http://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/jungfrau-ski-region/. The ones marked green are open, there should be more of those when you’re there.
