Hello! My husband and I will be visiting Switzerland as WWOOFers on a budget, and we are interested in exploring the beautiful country with a mix of staying at hostels and with camping. I’ve read mixed reports about whether “wild camping” is allowed. Is it legal? For example, if I arrive in Zurich and hike to the nearest “wild” area (Uetliberg?), could I simply find a place in the forest/field and pitch a small tent for one night? I would of course not make a fire or leave any trash, or in any way leave a trace that I was there. I am similarly wondering about whether this would be allowed in the Jungfrau and Luzern regions.

Your guidance and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

    Jade

    Hi Jade,

Wild camping is only allowed in some areas in high alpine terrain. So, pitching a tent in the forests or anywhere else is prohibited. Please see myswissalps.com/ campsites. You will need to book a camp site.
