    Hi,

I just bought a 8 day (with 2 free days) STP from Rail Europe( got link from 1 of the threads in the forum) so thank you that.

I have got a question regarding reservation on Glacier Express .

On Glacier Express website while trying to book seats it says I cannot book tickets but I can only reserve seats. While trying to my seats website did not ask for my STP number or whether I have any pass. The fare they (GEX) were charging me was only the reservation charges.

Mt question is can I still go ahead and reserve my seats and show my STP when I board the train and I won’t have any problems.

    Regards

    Harpreet

    Hello Harpreet,

Yes you can go ahead and reserve the seats for the Glacier Express and just pay the seat reservation charge.

They don’t care if you have a pass or a ticket or neither when you reserve a seat. The reservation gets you a seat and the pass allows you to actually do the journey. Just show the pass to the inspector on the train.

    Hi Rockoyster,

    Thanks for the information .

Just another question . I will be going from lucern to board GEX. from Chur or Andermatt ( that’s the section I’ll be doing).

My plan is to explore either Chur or Andermatt after we get off GEX. What in your opinion will be better option or better town to explore Chur or Andermatt. I will be travelling with my kids ( 6 and 15 years

    Any suggestion will be appreciated.

You say you want to explore Chur or Andermatt after you get off the GEX. Have you checked which town offers the best time to board the GEX coming from Luzern? There may still be only one departure per day in late April/early may.

If that is the only stretch of the Glacier Express you plan to travel on then I would recommend to do it on regular trains. There is little point paying for quite expensive seat reservations for such a short stretch. The scenery from the regular trains is exactly the same.

You also have the opportunity to get off the train at Oberalp Pass and enjoy lunch at the restaurant there.

I have never spent time in Andermatt but Chur has a lovely old town.

From Luzern I think the best thing to do would be a day trip to Oberalp via Andermatt and return the same way. You could even possibly fit in a boat trip from Luzern to Flüelen on the way.

    Thanks Rockoyster,

I am trying book seat reservation for GEX now. While entering individual details its( website) asking for ” REDUCTION” , I read one of your previous post you mentioned that if you have A STP you have to use Half Fare as reduction option. Just wanted to know what should I use for kids 6and 15 years old). I will have Family card for my kids with me while travelling on GEX.

    Regards

    Hi Harpreet G,

You shouldn’t select Half Fare as your reduction option. Otherwise you’d still pay half of the regular ticket fare for the ride, whereas this should be for free with your travel passes. The Half Fare discount selection may have been mentioned in the context of traveling with a Swiss Half Fare Card (http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard), or buying an upgrade ticket for a 1st class ride with a 2nd class pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/2nd1stclass).

Since you have a Swiss Travel Pass and a Swiss Family Card, the ride itself is for free and you’ll only have to pay for seat reservations for each traveler: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity. I’m not sure which website you’re using, but the ones listed at http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/tickets allow you to buy seat reservations only. This is targeted to travelers like you, who have a rail pass that grants free traveling.

See attached. Choose the options highlighted. Swiss Travel Pass for adults and Family Card for kids.
