It rather depends on where you accomodation is – and if you will be able to leave baggage somewhere promptly on arrival in Zermatt.
Imagine you had no luggage on arrival at Zermatt railways station, the most efficient way is to get the first available Gornergrat Bahn (GGB) train up to Gornergrat, spend some time up there – it doesn’t have to be all that long as weather permitting you can see the Matterhorn from train window on the journey up ; the minimum time needed for Gornergat is just on 2 hours (33 mins train each way with 30 mins at the top)
then return to Zermatt, come out of the GGB station and walk up the main street of the village. Walk through the village centre and carry on in a straight line and you eventually reach the base station of the cableways to Klein Matterhorn. You can do the KL side in about half a day.
