Best route from Interlaken to Pilatus to Lucerne

Short summary – read this first

Brad is planning a trip from Interlaken to Pilatus and then to Lucerne, and he's looking for advice on the best route. He considers going to Alpnachstad, taking the rail up to Pilatus, and then the cable car down to Kriens before heading to Lucerne. Local traveler Steph confirms this route is good but also suggests an alternative option that includes a scenic boat ride on Lake Lucerne.

Key takeaways:
  • To go from Interlaken to Pilatus, change trains in Sarnen to reach Alpnachstad for the best route.
  • If you're carrying luggage, consider storing it in Lucerne before your trip to Pilatus to make your journey easier.
  • Traveling with just a backpack is manageable on Mount Pilatus; avoid taking heavy suitcases.

Was wanting to confirm if we wanted to go from Interlaken to Pilatus to Lucerne, that we would go to somewhere near Alpnachstad, take the rail up to Pilatus and then take the cable car down to Kriens and finally take the train into Lucerne? Or, is there a better option?

    Thanks in advance,

    Brad

    Hello Brad,

Coming from Interlaken you would have to change in Sarnen in order to get to Alpnachstad, but this is for sure the best option. Alternatively you could go directly to Lucerne, from there to Kriens and do the trip the other way round, which would also allow you to take the boat ride on Lake Lucerne. However, the second option is slightly longer, of course.

Find details about how to get to Mount Pilatus below, as well as the fantastic timetable to support finding the best connection for your journey.

    Hello Brad,

Are you carting luggage? If so I’d strongly suggest you go to Luzern and either leave it at your hotel or the station before the Pilatus excursion. You wouldn’t really want to be carting luggage over the mountain.

Just backpacks for this leg, I assume that will be manageable up Mt.Pilatus?

Backpacks fine, suitcases not so much. 😉

    Thanks Steph

I saw Sarnen as the best option from either Interlaken or Brienz so thanks for confirming

    Cheers
