    Hi,

    I am visiting Switzerland from May 24, 2019 till June 6, 2019. During this visit, I will be making tours of Jungfraujoch, Matterhorn, Titlis, Pilatus, and Rigi. Obviously, I will need some warm clothing for these trips.

    Could anyone please guide me with respect to the following:

    1. Would items such as ear muffs, gloves, wind breakers be available at the base points of these mountains? I am coming from India, which being a warm country, we hardly need the use of these items. So, either I will need to purchase them from India and carry them along, or I can buy them at the base point (I am visiting Jungfraujoch first), and then use them during my stay at Switzerland and dispose them off before leaving;

    2. I will be staying at Geneva, Interlaken, Luzern and Zurich. What would be the temperature at these places during the period of my stay, and would I need any warm clothing for these places?

    Thanks

    Hi Kundu

    I am from India and I visited all the places you mention in your post 2 weeks ago.

    Its spring time now and summer is approaching . You can see the indicative temperature ranges on meteo website yourself . The forecasts are more accurate upt0 3 days ago but you can still check to get an idea of the temperature range.

    To answer your question, It would be best for you to buy the warm clothes in India. Switzerland is expensive and the CHFis much expensive than INR 🙂 so I wont recommend buying anything there unless it is necessary.

    Secondly, Its tricky to just look at temperatures to guage what it feels like without considering the wind speed.On the mountains it can get very windy and hence it is necessary to carry the protection.

    I would recommend to carry thin layers of protection instead of 1 large bulky jacket. This helps in adjusting to the ambient temperatures.for e.g you could be feeling cold while standing on the platform and a thick jacket may be comforting but as soon as you step inside the train, you may start sweating 🙂 This is where layers help and you can remove and wear them as per the need.

    Based on my experience, I would recommend to carry light jacket, beanie cap, gloves, muffler ( if you prefer), thermal clothing. I could manage well with these.

    Hello Kundu,

    It is always recommendable to have an “extra layer”, or two, with you in the mountains. Weather can change rapidly, even in the summer months.

    As nicely explained by Rohan it is very hard to say what weather you’ll find on the mountain. If the sun shines you can be lucky and have t-shirt weather, if it’s cloudy and windy, you’ll be very greatful for a jumper/sweater and jacket.

    I know that on the top of Mount Titlis you can rent jackets and shoes quite cheap (important for the snowy mountains), on the others I’m afraid not, whereas Pilatus and Rigi are lower and thus a little “warmer” than the other two and all mountains have heated indoor areas, too.
