    Friends,

Greetings. We are visiting Lucerne and Interlaken in mid July. We will have 3 nights in Lucern and 3 nights in Interlaken.

We had the following questions :

    1. Is it sufficient if we do a cruise on one of the 3 lakes in these 2 places – Lake Lucerne, Lake Brienz, Lake Thun ? Anything we would miss ? Any suggestion on preference of doing 1 or more of these lake cruises ?

    2. Is it possible to do JungrauJoch and Grindelwald First in a single day from Interlaken ? Or would each of these require 1 seperate day each ? Please do share your views and guidance.

    3. If we had to choose only one of Mt. Titlis, Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Rigi in Luzern, which one should it be ?

We are first time travellers to Switzerland. We will be having a Swiss Travel Pass with us.

    Thanks in advance.

    Shankar

    Hi Alignsankar,

    1. If you have time, it’s certainly worth taking boat trips on all three lakes. You can find the description of each lake from the following links:

Personally I like Lake Brienz because it’s smaller and a round trip takes less time to complete. But the other 2 lakes offer plenty of sightseeing options so you can combine boat trips and mountain excursions easily. For instance, a boat trip on Lake Lucerne can easily be combined with an excursion to Mt Rigi or Mt PIlatus.

    2. Yes, combining trips to Jungfraujoch and Grindelwald First in one day is doable. My suggestion is to start out early and try to get to Grindelwald First just before lunch so you’ll have lots of time to do the Cliff Walk, hike to Bachalpsee and do the adventure activities on First.

    3. With the Swiss Travel Pass, the excursion to Mt Rigi is free (all transport covered): https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity . So that might help you to decide quickly. Titlis and Pilatus are more touristy, have various facilities and therefore more interesting. Best to decide based on your interest and preferences.

    Hope this helps.

    regards,

    Anna

As far as lakes is concerned, I recommend a full day on Lake Luzern. The Lake Luzern boat fleet comprises (famously) a fleet of paddle steamers , all built between 1901 and 1928, so as you can see they are very old.

    http://www.lakelucerne.ch/en/your-cruise-experience/explore/our-fleet/

Lake Luzern, correctly known as Vierwaldstättersee (Lake of the four forest cantons) is big and the three parts are quite different, so a long cruise gives a fabulous varied views and famous places such as the cradle of the Swiss confederation and the Schiller rock.

If you go by paddle steamer Luzern – Fluelen you will see the whole lake , then you can come back by train to Luzern – the boat takes 2 hours 50 minutes. The train takes 1 hour.

Thanks Anna and 1960man for your inputs. They are helpful.

We will have more questions to ask in the days and weeks to come.

    Have a great day !
