Hello, i’d like to plan my first trip to Switzerland with my girfriend around the 21st of April for a few days. Im looking to visit oeschinen lake and blausee lake as well as the alpine coaster but im concerned because of the time of year what the situation is with these places? Some sources say the paths to the lakes are closed and some say the alpine coaster is only open in summer. (Also the alpine coaster website says that it is closed until 9th may 2020 for some reason) Also any tips on travel to these destinations and any hotel recoomendations would be great.

Nice to hear you’re coming for a visit!

Late April is somewhere between late winter season and early spring season, so sometimes a bit tricky to plan, but in no way impossible.

Which alpine coaster are you talking about in your post? The one from Oeschinensee? I see the same information on their webpage, that it will be closed until the end of this year at least. You might need to contact them for details, I simply don’t know.

I have delved a little deeper into the Oeschinensee website and it appears that the Mountain Coaster is open from the 11th May to 20th October 2019. 09.30 to 16.30 hour. Closed when raining.

Thankyou both for the advice and links! I think i will push this trip back by about 2 months as i’d like to visit with sunny weather and would be nice to have the coaster open (yes i did mean the oeschinen one). Cannot wait to visit, it looks incredible

Good idea. By the last week in June trails above 2000 meters are almost always open, so the Oeschinensee at 1580 meters will be surely accessible by then. In April, the trail might be open, but might be muddy, slushy, or worse. Or, it might be OK.

As Steph pointed out:

Altitude is crtical.

To illustrate the effect of altitude, this trail:

has a normal opening date around June 15th, on average. Some parts are open before that.. It may be earlier in years with little snow pack, occasionally it may be later. So, if I plan to walk it , to be safe, I never make a plan for before the 3rd week in June. But, it will likely be open earlier. The trails runs from about 2230 meters to about 2060 meters above sea level.

If you like good maps, this very detailed one gives altitudes, and shows the marked trails, as well as whole lot of other stuff.
