Suitcase or duffel bag on Swiss train?

Short summary – read this first

A couple is heading to Switzerland tomorrow, spending one night in Zurich, three nights in Lucerne, and three nights in Zermatt. They are unsure whether to take a medium-sized suitcase or a duffel bag, particularly considering the walkability of the streets and luggage storage on the train. They seek advice on which option would be more convenient for their trip.

Key takeaways:
  • There is enough space for your suitcase on the trains, as each carriage has designated luggage compartments.
  • Rolling suitcases are generally easy to manage in Swiss cities, especially given your hotels' proximity to train stations.
  • A medium-sized duffel bag should fit in the overhead storage on trains, making it a practical option if you prefer to carry less bulk.

My husband and I are leaving for Switzerland tomorrow! I might be overthinking this, but I’m having a hard time deciding between bringing my medium sized (24″) hard-sided suitcase or a squishable duffel bag. We fly into Zurich and are staying one night there, then 3 nights in Lucerne, followed by 3 nights in Zermatt. All three hotels are within 10 minutes walk to the train stations. Just wondering what the side walks are like and if it’s easy to navigate rolling suitcases on the roads or if I would be better off carrying a duffel bag. Also, I doubt that the suitcase would fit in any overhead storage compartments on the trains but I’m hoping a medium sized duffel bag would?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Julia, and welcome to MySwissAlps,

There’s enough space for your suitcase on the train. Every carriage has a special place for luggage. I always travel with rolling suitcases in Switzerland. Never had a problem. But it depends on the quality of your suitcase as well.
