Train from Colmar to Grindenwald to Basel

We are making our first trip to Europe in mid July. We plan to stay in Colmar three nights and then travel to Grindenwald for a few nights and then to Basel.

How soon should be purchase tickets for our leg from Colmar to Grindenwald and from Grindenwald to Basel? Are there sites that are better than others to purchase the tickets?

once in Grindenwlad are there any type of beneficial passes to purchase to explore the area using public transportation?

As for the Swiss portion of your itinerary: here are some options to consider:

• the Swiss Transfer Ticket Combi, allowing a free trip from Basel to Grindelwald (not Grindenwald ;-)) and back, plus a 50% discount on trips made from Grindelwald;
• a regular Swiss Transfer Ticket plus a local/regional pass. This could be a Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland or a Jungfrau Travel Pass.
