We will be traveling from Bern to Gimmelwald on the 2nd of Sept. We would like to see the sights in Bern but are unsure of when we will want to leave to go to Gimmelwald. Do you recommend deciding on a time and booking train ticket in advance, or booking the day we plan to leave? Will this affect the price and/ or availability of tickets?

Tickets are valid for the day and not bound to a specific train (only exception is Supersaver tickets so don’t buy those). Whether you buy on the spot or online to save some time in Bern does not matter price wise either, apart from small exchange rate differences and the odd online promotion (I’m not aware of any).

Reservations are not necessary on Swiss trains, except for some of the special panoramic trains.
Although you most likely can book seats on an Intercity train (IC) from Bern as far as Interlaken Ost, you cannot book the rest if the way. And, Regional trains in Switzerland do not allow reservations.
