We have just booked a week in Zurich in early December. Have never been to Switzerland before. Looking for suggestions of day trips from Zurich.

Restaurant suggestions also greatly appreciated but local restaurants preferred that are not ridiculously expensive – keep hearing how expensive it is there.

    Thanks so much.

Hi Donnai and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Have you seen this page? http://www.myswissalps.com/zu rich/activities

Was there some reason you decided on Zurich as a base? Or is that just where you fly into Switzerland?

What sort of things are you interested in seeing? Scenery or cities?

If you are there after 9 December and don’t mind a long (8+ hour) train trip you could actually do a trip day trip taking in the iconic Glacier Express between Chur and Brig. See http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress

    Hi Donnai,

Yes, do let us know your interests so we can give you relevant suggestions. Also, how far each day are you willing to travel by train to go somewhere? Zurich isn’t very central for some of the more mountainous areas that are often popular with tourists; but if you don’t mind using the trains a lot it can still work.

Use the timetable to plan trips between different towns and mountains that you may want to visit to see what time durations are like.

For tips on how to save money in Switzerland click here. For some meals you may want to look at buying cold or hot food from local grocery stores (very nice options usually!) like Coop and Migros as well.

Most meals start at between 20 and 30 chf for the main course

We chose Zurich because there was a good airfare deal and we had never been to Switzerland before. We like cultural activities, eating and shopping. We figured we would be using the train a lot and have no problems doing that. We were in Munich 2 years ago in December and loved the Christmas markets. And we would just like to relax and enjoy another culture different from the US. Will the weather be a deterrent at all? Figured the temperatures would be like Munich in December which was fine. Saw side trip to Mount Tiltis or the Rhine Falls – are things like that doable in the winter?

    Thanks to all.

The temperatures in Zurich should be about the same as it would be in Munich give or take.

Yes, trips to Mt. Titlis or another mountain near Lucerne are quite doable as a day trip from Zurich. Just use the link for the timetable in my last post to make sure the durations work for you. I’d expect the average person stays at the mountain top 2-3 hours.

St. Gallen is also a nice option to visit on a day trip, as would Rheinfall, and Stein am Rhein – a lot of places can work depending on how long you are ok to sit on a train – check out your options here : what to do in Switzerland & where to go.

Zurich should work well for shopping and cultural activities like museums, art galleries and Christmas markets (until Dec.23).
