Would anyone please suggest how to get from Geneva to Zermatt in order to ride the Gornergrat to the Matterhorn viewing area. We only have 3 nights on this leg of our journey and want to fit in as much as possible. Is the Swiss travel pass the most economical and does that cover the cost of the Gornergrat? Thanks in advance for any information!

Hi Coryna, and welcome to MySwissAlps,

    1. Geneva to Zermatt is not far. Please use the timetable to plan your trip: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.
    2. Read here how to get to Gornergrat: http://www.myswissalps.com/go rnergrat/gettingthere.
    3. The train from Zermatt to Gornergrat is 50% off with the Swiss Travel Pass. I doubt if this is the most economical one if this is the only activity and trip you are planning to do. You will have to do the math. You should read how to choose a rail pass.

    I hope this helps.

Geneva to Zermatt is a bit over 7 hour round trip. Zermatt to Gornergrat about a 40 minute trip each way.

The full fare Geneva to Zermatt is CHF98. Gornergrat trip is also coincidentally CHF98.

So Geneva to Zermatt to Gornergrat to Zermatt to Geneva will cost you CHF294. With a Swiss Half Fare Card your outlay will be CHF267 (including the cost of the card in the first place). With a 3-day adult Swiss Travel Pass your outlay will be CHF274. A Saver Day Pass (if you can get for best price of CHF52) for Geneva to Zermatt would be the best deal at CHF150 all up.

When you say you “only have 3 nights on this leg of our journey” are you travelling anywhere else in Switzerland. That will have a major bearing of what pass is best.

THank you so much, that was very helpful. No we will fly into Geneva on the 8th at about 6pm and fly out of Geneva at 12:15 on the 11th. We will be returning to Salamanca to bring home our daughter who has been studying there for 6 months!
