Day trip from Schenkon to Interlaken-Jungfraujoch?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is visiting Switzerland at the end of August with two kids, staying in Schenkon. They are wondering if it's possible and worthwhile to do Mt. Jungfrau and Interlaken in one day, and whether to travel by train or drive. The focus is on making the trip enjoyable and manageable for their children.

Key takeaways:
  • Using trains is generally more convenient than driving in Switzerland.
  • It's advisable to check the altitude health concerns for young kids when considering Jungfraujoch.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass can provide discounts and save time on trips, like to Stanserhorn, which involves less travel compared to Jungfrau.

We are visiting Switzerland with 2 kids at Aug end. Our base will be at Schenkon. Just wondering would it be possible to do Mt Jungfaru and Interlaken on same day with kids? Would it be worth traveling by train or by driving?

Hi Poojachavan1 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

You can only drive as far as Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald before you must take a train….if you are using trains regularly then I’d buy a rail pass and use trains for all trips (usually more convenient than driving in Switzeralnd).

You can see how long the trip will take by train using the timetable here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

and check out rail passes and check the math if they make sense for you, here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass // http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses

Hi Poojachavan1. I agree with Rockoyster; in most cases it’s much easier to use public transportation only. You can read about it at http://www.myswissalps.com/ca rversustrain.

Thanks Luke n Annika for your kind response.

So u suggest train from Schenkon to Jungfaru? May I know how much time it will take travelling by train?

I am more conscious of time with 2 kids but really dont want to miss visiting most scenic spots of Swiss

    Hi Poojachavan1

When you first posted this question it was headed ‘5 days trip with 1 yr and 5 years old kids.’ I think that it is recommended that children be at least 2 years old when travelling up to Jungfraujoch because of the high altitude. The main reason being that they will then be able to tell you if they feel ill and you will know that they are suffering from altitude sickness when you reach the top station. I am sure someone will know more about the recommendations.

If you look at the SBB timetable that Luke suggested you can easily find the travel times and modes of transport from Schenkon to the Jungfraujoch. http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

I looked at Google Maps and it looks like the car journey from Schenkon to Lauterbrunnen is about one and a half hours. I then looked at the SBB time table and the journey from Lauterbrunnen to Jungfrauhjoch is another one and a half hours.

    Good luck with your planning.

    Hi Poojachavan1,

Yes, I definitely recommend train traveling. A car won’t get you any farther than Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald, and then you’ll have to leave it there and pay for parking. Details are in the timetable that’s been mentioned.

JaneEB is right about the risk of high altitude sickness for young children. You can read about it under “Preparation” at http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch. If you’re hesitant about this, you’d best check with your pediatrician and/or pick another mountain at lower altitude. Examples would be Stanserhorn (http://www.myswissalps.com/st anserhorn) or Rigi (http://www.myswissalps.com/ri gi) near Lucerne. The timetable and the “Route” tabs on both pages Iinked to allow you to find connections from Schenkon.

We went to the Stanserhorn in June. It was 100% discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass and was a most enjoyable trip. It would involve a lot less travelling in comparison to travelling to the Jungfrau region from Schenkon.

Thanks JaneEB and Annika for your reply.

Yes, we would be visiting Swiss for 5 days and was very keen to visit Jungfaru.

22 Aug 19- arriving Zuric- driving and making our base at Schenkon and 26 Aug- Morning driving to visit Rhine falls and catch a return flight to London at 5.30pm

Could you please recommend which places we can visit on 23-24-25 Aug?

We are more interested to visit and show kids mountains and lakes which are most scenic in Swiss.

    Hi Poojachavan1,

If you stay in Schenkon, I’d focus on the Zurich and Lucerne areas if I were you. You’ll find our day trip recommendations at

Zug and Bern (http://www.myswissalps.com/be rn) would be nice for day trips as well. You could list those as alternative plans in case weather isn’t good enough to visit mountain tops.
