Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Bethp_ is planning her first trip to Switzerland in May to celebrate her 30th birthday. She's excited but feeling overwhelmed by the choices of places like Zermatt, Grindelwald, Lucerne, and Bern. Bethp_ is looking for advice on whether to stay in one place or travel between several locations while exploring the country.

Key takeaways:
  • For a 7-day trip, it's recommended to stay in at least 2 locations and make day trips from those bases.
  • Starting in Interlaken or the Jungfrau region is a great option for easy access to Grindelwald, Bern, and Lucerne.
  • Consider your second base to be either Brig or Montreux for good connections to Zermatt.
  • Don't forget to look into the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient public transport across the country.

Hey everyone! I’m looking to visit Switzerland this May for the first time. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed with all of the options/gorgeous places to visit whilst trying to do my planning.

We’d love to do a bit of exploring and see a few different places but aren’t sure whether we need to base ourselves in one location & use public transport or if it’s best to move around stay in a few locations? We’ll probably be flying into Zurich from the UK & out of Geneva back to the UK. I’d love to see the smaller towns like Zermatt/Grindelwald and maybe Lucerne/Bern but again, not sure where is best to visit at this time of year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! The main focus of the trip is celebrating my 30th birthday whilst seeing some of the most beautiful places Switzerland has to offer 🙂

    Hi Bethp_,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

For a 7-day trip, you might want to consider staying in at least 2 places and just plan day trips from each base. This will give you more opportunities to explore the Swiss Alps.

Based on your plans, I would pick Interlaken or somewhere in the Jungfrau region as your first base. From Interlaken, you can plan day trips to Grindelwald, Bern and Lucerne. Here is our handy guide for Interlaken: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/interlaken/

The next base would be either Brig or Montreux. Both have good connections to Zermatt. Staying in Zermatt could also be an option. Below for further information on each destination.

    Montreux: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/montreux/

Hope this gets you started. Feel free to post again if you need more suggestions.
