8 day itinerary – arrive Geneva, depart Zurich
A traveler and her husband are visiting Switzerland for the first time, arriving in Geneva and departing from Zurich over eight days. They want advice on their busy itinerary that includes Montreux, Zermatt, Wengen, and Lucerne, as well as whether to choose a Swiss Travel Pass or a Half Fare Card.
- Your itinerary looks great as planned; don’t worry about the pace.
- Opt for a Swiss Travel Pass for convenience—it covers most transport and offers entry discounts.
- Start your Swiss Travel Pass on arrival day to maximize use, and buy a separate ticket for your last day to the airport.
- Consider taking a scenic boat trip from Montreux to Château de Chillon for a unique experience.
- You can forward luggage between stations for just 12 CHF, making travel easier.

Hello! My husband and I will be travelling to Switzerland for our first time next month. We arrive early 9/8 in Geneva and depart from Zurich on 9/16 to return to the US.
Our current itinerary is as follows:
2 nights in Montreux – Explore with day trips to the Chateau de Chillon, Castle of Gruyeres, La Maison du Gruyere, Maison Cailler Chocolaterie
2 nights in Zermatt – Explore the village with day trips to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Mt. Gornergrat
2 nights in Wengen – Jungfrau -day trip and Explore Murren, Lauterbrunnen, boat ride on Lake Brienz
2 nights in Lucerne – Explore with day trips to Mount Pilatus OR Mt Rigi, Chapel Bridge, Swiss Museum of Transport, Lake Lucerne area.
Last Day: Depart Lucerne for Zurich (ZRH) Airport early AM (~11:30am flight back home).
My question is have we packed in too much, is this a good order or should we switch. Also trying to see if we can cut down to 3 bases vs 4. Any advice will be much appreciated. I am also confused on whether we should get Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass.
