9 days Switzerland North to South for 5 adults

Short summary – read this first

Tommy is planning an 8-day trip to Switzerland in September with a group of 5 adults aged 55-69. They love mountains and sightseeing but can only do limited hiking, so they want advice on their itinerary and the best way to use the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • 1. Consider basing in Lauterbrunnen or Wengen for better access to activities and sights.
  • 2. The Swiss Travel Pass does not start at your first train ride; plan for point-to-point tickets for Day 1 and Day 9.
  • 3. For Day 2, take the train to Stoos, as the funicular is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, then enjoy the boat ride to Vitznau.
  • 4. Schilthorn is a great alternative to Glacier 3000 and is free with the Swiss Travel Pass.
  • 5. Large chocolate stores are common in Swiss towns, especially near railway stations.

Hello expertise, I need some advise for my upcoming trip. Thanks in advance.

I plan to have 8 days trip in September, we are a group of 5 adults and senior. Age from 55 – 69. We love mountains, sightseeing, natures, photo shooting, cannot do too much hiking (about 2hrs at a time). We have a few days in Amsterdam before we arrive in Zurich, and continue to Italy after Switzerland.

    My itinerary is:

Day 1: Arrive Zurich and train to Luzern, city walk and visit Lion Monument Garden – sleep in Luzern

Day 2: Visit Stoos and Rigi Kulm – sleep in Luzern

Day 3: Train to Bern – Thun, boat ride to Interlaken, visit Trummelbach fall and Lauterbrunnen – sleep in Interlaken West

Day 4: Visit Glacier 3000, on the way back visit Spiez and Castle – sleep in Interlaken West

Day 5: Visit Firstbahn, cliff walk and play with the adventure package ride. Visit Männlichen and hike to Kleine Scheidegg – sleep in Interlaken West

Day 6: Train to Zermatt, visit Klein Matterhorn – sleep in Zermatt

Day 7: Visit Gornergrat and Lake Rifflesee, regular train (same route of GEX) to Chur & city walk – sleep in Chur

Day 8: Bernina Express to Tirano and continue to Lugano – sleep in Lugano

Day 9: City walk and may visit Swissminiatur and continue to Italy in the afternoon

I have some questions for my itinerary.

    1. Is my itinerary works well without too rush?

    2. Is the 8 days Swiss Travel Pass best use for the trip? What day should I first use, or can I start use in Day 1 at 13:00 and end in Day 9 at 13:00?

    3. What is the best way to visit Stoos and Rigi plus a boat ride on Day 2? Is the barrel funicular in Stoos covered by STP?

    4. I choose to visit G3000 instead of Jungfraujoch on Day 4 (because less expensive and like the Tissot walk), are they similar other than the elevation? Any comment on that?

    5. We also like to visit a Chocolate factory or a large Chocoate Store, is there one that can fit in along our route?

    6. We love to see the cow parade as well, anywhere that we can have a chance to see this in our trip?

    Sorry for so many questions!

    Thanks

    Tommy

    1. Is my itinerary works well without too rush?

Looks fine but consider a base in Lauterbrunnen or Wengen. Interlaken is a good transport hub but not much else.

    2. Is the 8 days Swiss Travel Pass best use for the trip? What day should I first use, or can I start use in Day 1 at 13:00 and end in Day 9 at 13:00?

The STP works on a full day basis. It doesn’t start when you take your first train ride. Best thing to do is work out fares for your plans on days 1 and 9 and just buy point to point tickets for that. Probably going to be Zurich to Luzern.

    3. What is the best way to visit Stoos and Rigi plus a boat ride on Day 2? Is the barrel funicular in Stoos covered by STP?

Take train to Stoos (funicular is covered by STP) then return to Brünnen and catch boat to Vitznau. Take train to Rigi Kulm and the to Arth-Goldhau and return to Luzern. Just one of many permutations.

    4. I choose to visit G3000 instead of Jungfraujoch on Day 4 (because less expensive and like the Tissot walk), are they similar other than the elevation? Any comment on that?

Why not Schilthorn which is free with STP. From Lauterbrunnen a very nice circuit to do is to Grütschalp (cable car), Mürren (train), Gimmelwald (cable car), Stechelberg (cable car), Lauterbrunnen (bus). From Mürren you can easily visit Schilthorn and Birg. In between Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen the bus stops at the Trummelbach Falls. Well worth a visit.

    5. We also like to visit a Chocolate factory or a large Chocoate Store, is there one that can fit in along our route?

It is difficult to avoid large chocolate shops in any Swiss town. Most bigger railway stations have one.

    6. We love to see the cow parade as well, anywhere that we can have a chance to see this in our trip?

Thank you rockoster, your suggestions are really helpful.

Also thanks for the Jungfra Region suggestion, it should be good too. You had mentioned Schilthorn is free with STP. Really? I know Schilthorn was free with STP last year, but I am not sure this year, thought it only cover 50%.

So you are not recommend to G3000 when the base is in Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen, right?

    Schilthorn is free in 2019 – yes: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity.

    Maybe read this about Glacier 3000 – http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/day-trip-to-glacier-3000-near-gstaad.

Your choice. I have not personally been to Glacier 3000.
