I am interested in any non-touristy day trips accessible from Basel. Interested in seeing / experiencing the Alps or anything fun that involves some physical activity. Timing is weekendnof November 10.

    Hi Ssitek,

If you are looking for a mountain trip, your closest options from Basel will be around Lucerne. See those mountains noted here: http://www.myswissalps.com/lu cerne/activities

You can always make a longer trip to go to the Jungfrau region as well (http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion)

You can enter Basel to whichever mountain or town appeals to you most to see travel times on a train: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

Though those towns and regions are popular for tourists so I’m not sure if that is ‘non-touristy’ enough for you. I think you won’t find many tourists at this time of year no matter where you go.

Hiking options are getting pretty limited now though and you may not find many options open for hikes. Rigi might be a good idea: http://www.myswissalps.com/ri gi

These might fit your interests. Not sure when the Südrampe trail close for the winter. Tends to be sunny and dry, so it might be available

Also- see if any of these are suitable, remembering that the high altitude ones will likely not be accessible:

There are a number of spas in and near Basel, such as the Dampfbad.

If you are with children, you may consider the theme park Europa Park in nearby Germany:

If you prefer hiking you could go to Leymen, France (37 min. from Basel main station, by streetcar (Tram) lines 2, 16 and 10) and hike to the Landskron castle ruins. And lunch at one of the good restaurants of Leymen, although the local speciality, aspargus, would not be available at this time of the year.

    Hi Snowman and SSitek,

I see that the EuropaPark is closed from November 5 to November 23 of this year. No idea why, but they open for their Winter season on November 24, and this ends on January 13 (but closed on December 24 and 25 and January 7 through 11).

However, perhaps our traveler would be interested in exploring a bit on the left bank of the Rhine as it heads north from Basel. The Alsace Wine Route is beautiful and one could (weather permitting) rent a bicycle to do part of it. At the bottom of the following link are 12 places where one can rent a bicycle. http://www.cyclinginalsace.co m/en/cycle-trails/waterways-and-vineyard-cycle-routes/alsace-wine-road-cycle-route-36.html
