Closures on the route Lauterbrunnen-Grütschalp-Mürren in Oct/Nov?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler from Australia is planning a trip to Lauterbrunnen in late October to early November 2025. They are looking for information on the closure dates for the Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp gondola cable car and the train to Mürren, as well as what to expect for their visit during that time. They need tips on weather and travel options during their stay.

Key takeaways:
  • The Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp gondola and Grütschalp to Mürren train will be closed from October 27 to November 7, 2025, so plan accordingly.
  • Consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass for more travel flexibility, especially if rain affects your plans in the Jungfrau Region.
  • Book your accommodation early since many hotels close from early to mid-October, leading to limited availability.
  • Dress in layers and bring waterproof clothing and shoes, as weather conditions can change quickly.

Hello from Australia. Apologies if these questions have been previously posted. I’m planning a trip to Lauterbrunnen next October / November 2025. Two questions about the annual shut down of the Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp gondola cable car and the Grütschalp to Mürren train. Are there set dates for the closures? For example – the last day of October. Or a set date? Or a date depending on the season? Also does the Mürren to Stechelberg gondola cable car close too? Any other considerations I need to be aware of with a planned October / November 2025 visit?

Hi Neville, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

    >>> I’m planning a trip to Lauterbrunnen next October / November 2025.

Some mountain transport runs all year, but if you have the flexibility to finish your stay in the Jungfrau Region by 26 October 2025, you will have more options, as most of it is operating at least until then. However, the last day of the season for the Mürren-Allmendhubel funicular is 19 October 2025.

If that’s not possible, you can see what options you have for your dates here:

    https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/live/operating-info/

    >>> Two questions about the annual shut down of the Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp gondola cable car and the Grütschalp to Mürren train. Are there set dates for the closures?

There are set dates for maintenance closures twice per year, in April-May and October-November. The October-November closure in 2025 is from 27 October to 7 November. Whenever the Lauterbrunnen-Grütschalp-Mürren route is closed, you can access Mürren by bus Lauterbrunnen-Stechelberg and cable car Stechelberg-Mürren.

    >>> Also does the Mürren to Stechelberg gondola cable car close too?

It used to, but from 15 March 2025, the Stechelberg-Mürren-Schilthorn route will operate daily all year.

Just by the by, you might be interested in the difference between a cable car and a gondola, which was discussed in detail in the forum some years ago. I have also attached some pictures of the inside and outside of assorted cable cars and gondolas.

    >>> Any other considerations I need to be aware of with a planned October / November 2025 visit?

    • Have back-up plans for days when the mountains are in the clouds or when it’s raining. Snowfall can’t be ruled out, but probably won’t hang around for long.
    • Download the MeteoSwiss app for the best weather forecasts. You can get separate forecasts for mountain tops, which is crucial.
    • Consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass (if you are staying long enough) so you have the flexibility to travel elsewhere with better weather when it’s raining in the Jungfrau Region: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/.
    • Book your accommodation early for the best choices. Although demand will be lower at that time of year, the stock of hotel rooms is also lower, as many hotels close from early-mid October until about mid-December.
    • Bring some warm clothing, a waterproof jacket and waterproof shoes with a good grip.
    • Dress in layers to cater to changing weather conditions.

    Hope this helps!

We had three weeks in Switzerland in October this year.

We tried very hard to time our trip for the first half of October, and it worked well.  Pretty well everything was open, we even managed to squash in Schilthorn before it shut for maintenance.

We stayed in Wengen, and only one hotel and a couple of restaurants were closed in our week (4th to 11th October).  We did visit Murren a couple of times around lunch time and disappointingly found that there was very little open.

I certainly wouldn’t recommend staying in Murren at that time of year judging on what we saw this year.

I couldn’t agree more with Alpenrose’s advice, we had a list of things to see and do and just shuffled it according to the weather.

Have fun planning, but try hard to go earlier in October rather than later.

    Hello Neville.

I would endorse everything Alpenrose says.  And the advice from your fellow Australian DEbH is obviously extremely useful.

I would just add to one of Alpenrose’s points, where she says

Consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass (if you are staying long enough) so you have the flexibility to travel elsewhere with better weather when it’s raining in the Jungfrau Region

I agree.  But if you are considering making longer distance excursions from your Berner Oberland base, I would suggest base yourself in Interlaken (the terminus of the standard gauge main line) rather than in Lauterbrunnen.  (Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen takes 20 minutes, and the narrow gauge trains run every 30 minutes.)

    Best wishes

    Roger

    Hi Neville,

Mürren is accessible all year round. There are two ways to travel to Mürren – 1) via the Grutschalp cableway from Lauterbrunnen and 2) via the cable car from Stechelberg. The cableway and cable car routinely close twice a year for maintenance but never at the same time so residents and visitors alike can travel to Mürren all year round.

You can find information on how to reach Mürren on this page, including links to operation and maintenance dates: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/lauterbrunnen-murren/

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna
