Berner Oberland Pass: Zurich Airport-Interlaken

Short summary – read this first

Shamik is traveling to Interlaken with his wife and daughter, arriving at Zurich Airport on August 7th. He wants to know if he can buy tickets from the airport to Bern and then use the Bernese Oberland Pass to continue to Interlaken West, and if he can take different train connections to Bern depending on his arrival time. He also seeks clarity on whether he needs a separate ticket for the Bern to Interlaken leg of the journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase a full fare ticket from Zurich Airport to Bern to have flexible travel options.
  • Once you reach Bern, your Bernese Oberland Pass will cover the trip to Interlaken West.
  • The Bernese Oberland Pass covers some alternative routes, like via Lucerne, but it takes longer.

    Hello all,

Thanks for maintaining this wonderful forum. Me, my wife and daughter are arriving in Zurich Airport from Amsterdam on 7th Aug. We then directly move to our hotel in Interlaken West. I am planning to get a Bernese Oberland pass starting same day (7th Aug). I understand the BO pass kicks in from Bern (on the Zurich Airport->Interlaken West route). When I look into the SBB site, there are multiple options (e.g., change in Bern/ changein Zurich HBF etc at different times). If I buy Zurich Airport -> Bern tickets using any one option from the site, can I also use the other options provided they all transit through Bern? I am asking since depending on what time I land, I could take an earlier or later connection. Also, since BO pass kicks in from Bern, there will be no need to buy Bern->Interlaken west tickets, correct?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

    Regards

    Shamik

    Hello Shamik,

Thank you for your kind words and I hope you and your family are looking forward to your trip.

Firstly that’s correct, all you need is a ticket from Zurich airport to Bern. Thereon your Berner Oberland Pass would kick in and you can travel all the way to Interlaken West with your pass. If you need any purchase options for your Berner Oberland Pass, you can find some here:

Do have a read of the other sections in the above link – there is a handy coverage map that can be downloaded, how to use and other useful information.

Your ticket from Zurich airport would only have restrictions if you purchased for example a Supersaver ticket – these types of tickets are time and date specific. I don’t think you are anticipating this type of ticket so yes, purchasing a point-to-point full fare ticket, you can travel on any route to reach Bern.

Do plan your journey using the SBB timetable: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi

I believe the BO pass also covers the trip to Interlaken via Lucerne?

    Thanks Peter Adrian,

Yes, that is another option to reach Interlaken, via Lucerne. It will take slightly longer, by approximately an hour or so.

Shamik, in reading, if you wanted to research this route, you can do so via the SBB timetable, just ensure in the “via” box, you insert Lucerne. Your Berner Oberland Pass would be valid from Lucerne. Here is the coverage map so you can take a look:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Yolanda,

Thanks, I did look at the Lucerne-Interlaken route but decided on the Bern-Interlaken option since it is slightly shorter duration. Also, we loved the journey beside Lake Thun the last time we visited and want to repeat the experience!

    Regards

    All good Shamik.

I have to agree with you there, although the route via Lucerne is also lovely. The view of Lake Thun via Bern is stunning.

    Have a great trip.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
