Bernina Express from Zermatt to Tirano

Short summary – read this first

Celest and her family are planning a trip on the Bernina Express from Zermatt to Tirano. She's unsure if they need a regular train to get to Chur first and whether the Bernina bus from Tirano to Lake Como is included in their train fare.

Key takeaways:
  • You need to take a regular train from Zermatt to Chur for the Bernina Express.
  • The Bernina bus to Lake Como is not included in the train fare, so you'll have to pay separately unless you hold a Swiss Travel Pass or a Saver Day Pass, which covers the bus ride.
  • Use the SBB website or app to find the most current timetables and fares for your journey.

    Hi all,

me and family plan to take bernina express from zermatt to tirano but when I check the Bernina express’s timetable it’s only shown the timing from start from Chur station. Is tat means we need to take the normal train from Zermatt to Chur? As I roughly checked it take abt 4 hours train ride is that true?

from tirano we plan to take the bernina bus to lake Como isit include in the train fare or we need to book separately?

    Thanks in advance.

    regards,

    celest

The Glacier Express runs from Zermatt to St Moritz (or Chur if you choose).

The Bernina Express runs from Chur to Tirano.

For both routes you can use regular trains instead of the “tourist Express” trains which require seat reservations and are more frequent.

The Bernina Express Bus runs from Tirano to Lugano. You can’t “hop off” at “Lake Como”.

Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel, find fares* and buy tickets if required. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable. *SBB website shows half-fare prices by default, mobile app allows you to nominate full or half-fare and is also smart enough to offer you the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass) if that offers the best fare.

    Hello Celest!

In addition to Rockoyster’s answer: if you follow his links to the Glacier and Bernina Express pages and click the “Route” tabs, you’ll see the routes for both trains explained. The bus segment between Tirano and Lugano is described there too. If your destination is Lake Como rather than Lugano, you shouldn’t use the Bernina Express bus as that’s an ongoing ride. You’d better enter your precise destination at Lake Como in the Swiss timetable at http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable, and see which other options are available.

You asked whether the bus would be included in the train fare. Assuming you’ll be using regular tickets: no, you’d have to pay for the bus ride separately. But if you hold a train pass such as the Swiss Travel Pass or a Saver Day Pass, the ride is free except for additional seat reservations:

Here’s how to find out which ticket or pass is best for your plans: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass.
