Best site to purchase Swiss train tickets

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Mia206 is planning a trip from Interlaken Ost to Zermatt on September 6. They are confused about the different ticket prices listed on various websites and whether they should buy their train tickets now or wait until closer to their travel date.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase your train tickets from official sites like SBB for the best prices.
  • Consider buying your tickets in advance, especially for longer journeys or if you want to use options like the Saver Day Pass, which may sell out quickly.
  • Normal tickets within Switzerland can be bought just before departure, but ensure you have them before boarding.

    Hello,

Which is the best website to purchase train tickets. I find prices different in different places . For ex: for Sep 6 travel from Interlaken OSt to Zermatt, 8 am departure, most travel websites ( rome2rio,travleeurope etc) show price as approx 75 CHF where as SBB shows 41 with half fare card. I would have expected the fare to be around 35 in SBB site with half fare card..

Do you also recommend purchasing the tickets now or closer to the travel ( our dates are fixed)

    Hi Mia206!

All options listed at https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland/price (or https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerlandhalffare/price if you have a Swiss Half Fare Card) are fine to buy your train tickets from.

Varying fares are often caused by special offers, such as Saver Day Passes (https://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass) or Supersaver tickets (https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland). These come with restrictions though. We explain how to find “official” standard fares through the Swiss timetable at https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.

How early to buy depends on the journey. For international journeys it’s often best to book well in advance. For long journeys in Switzerland, for which a Saver Day Pass might be cheaper than normal tickets, it’s best to buy early too: https://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/price. Interlaken-Ost to Zermatt is a good example. A regular 50% discounted ticket costs CHF 41.50, but a 50% discounted Saver Day Pass can be as cheap as CHF 29.

Normal tickets within Switzerland can be bought at any time, even shortly before departure. As long as you have your ticket before boarding, you’re fine.

    I hope this helps!

    Hi Mia0206

The price of Saver Day Passes increases with time until they are sold out.

i have never bought one as cheap as 29 CHF even though I set reminders on my phone and buy them on the day they become available.

I imagine a lot of people do the same and the price increases rapidly.

We were there in June and at that time they were available 2 months in advance so I bought them in April. They are now available 6 months in advance.

    Kind regards

    Jane
