A traveler is planning to ride the Bernina Express from Lugano to Chur and the Glacier Express from Chur to Zermatt. They need specific information on where to board these trains to avoid confusion with regular routes. They also mention their travel in September.
Key takeaways:
Check the timetable on the SBB Mobile App for train numbers and platform details.
From Lugano, take a bright red bus to Tirano for the Bernina Express.
In Chur, board the Glacier Express at the main station, typically from platforms 10 or 11.
Look for trains with big panoramic windows for the scenic experience.
Follow signs and listen for announcements at stations to avoid missing your trains.

1. We will be travelling the Bernina Express – Lugano to Chur. In Lugano, where do we board the train that is designated as the Bernina Express? I am afraid that I may get on a regular train that takes me another route.
2. Again, taking the Glacier Express (September 2020) from Chur to Zermatt. In Chur, where do you board for the Glacier Express? Do you go to the Chur main station ?

Hi TMKA,
first of all, there are no stupid questions, your questions are good.
The answer for both of them, that you can check the timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable or the SBB Mobile App) and it indicates not just the departure time but also the number of the platform. So you cannot miss it.
The second thing, that the panoramic trains look different than the local trains, they have bigger, panoramic windows. You can see pictures about the Glacier Express at http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/pictures, and you can see also the top-light windows on some of the pics.
Also, the name of the panoramic trains can be found somewhere on the train.

“In Lugano, where do we board the train that is designated as the Bernina Express?”
The Bernina Express train runs from Tirano to Chur. From Lugano to Tirano you travel on a BUS.
The bus departs from just outside Lugano Main station. You will find it just to the north of the main entrance to the station. You can’t miss it. It is bright red.
When you get to Tirano just follow the rest of the passengers to the Swiss train station or read this and lead the way. 😉

Thank you ! If I am correct- the red bus in Lugano is part of the Bernina Express route & then I get on the red train in Tirano which is the train portion of the Bernina Express.

Correct. In Tirano get on the red train that has big windows and “Bernina Express” emblazoned on the side. You will find a lot of red trains in Switzerland.
At Chur you catch the Glacier Express at the same station you get off the Bernina Express.
At the entrance to almost all stations you will find large blue signs indicating what platform various trains are departing from. A bit like the departures signs at airports.
You can’t go wrong.

The Glacier Express almost always departs from Platform (Track) 10 or 11 at Chur station. It rarely departs from platform 12, and cannot depart from platforms 9, 8, 7 etc as it would fall off the track as the Glacier Express train runs on narrow (1000mm) track gauge !

The Bernina railway is part of the Rhaetian railway (RhB) – essentially the ‘national railway’ of Canton Graubünden.
All the Rhaetian railway trains are red – follow signs and listen for announcements (always clearly audible on Swiss stations and multiple languages including English )
