Book Glacier Expr from Zermatt but get on in Brig?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is visiting Switzerland and wants to ride the Glacier Express, but they can only catch the train in Brig. They've found tickets from Zermatt but wonder if they can board in Brig instead, and if there are regular trains on the same route as alternatives.

Key takeaways:
  • If you can’t get a seat on the Glacier Express, you can make a reservation from Zermatt and board in Brig.
  • Regular commuter trains follow a similar route to the Glacier Express and don’t require reservations, but may involve train changes at Andermatt and Disentis.
  • Use the SBB Timetable to plan your journey effectively, especially if you're unfamiliar with the system.

I was fortunate enough to get a last minute trip to Switzerland. I want to ride the Glacier Express and will be coming early in the morning from Geneva. I can’t get all the way to Zermatt but could catch the train in Brig. Unfortunately, there are no tickets left from Brig but there are tickets from Zermatt. Is it possible to pay for a ticket but get on in Brig?

If this is not a possibility, do regular commuter trains ride the same lines? If they do, what is the downside of these trains vs the Glacier Express?

    Thanks!

Hello Kempc1 and Welcome to MySwissAlps

When you say there are no tickets left do you mean no seat reservations available? Have you checked at shop.glacierexpress.ch /.

I don’t see why you couldn’t make a seat reservation from Zermatt and buy a ticket and board at Brig. Although I can’t see how there would be seats available from Zermatt but free seats thereafter. It is likely more people will board at Brig.

But you can follow the same Glacier Express route on regular trains without the need for reservations and little downside apart from having to change trains at Andermatt and Disentis and Chur if you are continuing to St Moritz.

Use the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to plan your travel. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on that page. Make sure to include via Andermatt.

Thank you for such a quick reply. I did mean reservations. I see now that Zermatt doesn’t have reservations left for my date (March 23) either.

I’m very happy with the regular trains so I’ll make my plans to go that way.

Thank you again for helping ease my mind!
