Hopping on/off transportation to Schilthorn, ticket prices Schilthorn

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a family day trip from Lauterbrunnen to the Schilthorn, seeking advice on whether they can stop at Trummelbach Falls and Murren along the way. They also have questions about ticket pricing and whether they should buy tickets in advance or wait for better weather.

Key takeaways:
  • You can stop at Trummelbach Falls and Murren during your trip with a regular ticket.
  • It’s a good idea to go to Schilthorn first if the weather is clear to avoid clouds later.
  • Buying tickets online the evening before is an option, but be aware there are no refunds for poor weather.
  • In May, ticket sales are not likely to run out since it’s low season.

Hello, my family will be staying in Lauterbrunnen and are planning to take a day trip to the Schilthorn. SBB shows this ticket as involving a bus (#141) to Stechelberg and then cable cars to Schilthorn (via Gimmelwald and Murren). But we wondered if we could get off the bus at Trummelbach Falls on the way, touring the falls for about an hour, then catch the next bus on the way to Stechelberg to continue our journey. Then we wondered if we could stop in Murren for a visit before again continuing our journey to Schilthorn. Is this sort of thing possible with just the purchase of a full fare, regular ticket (and without having to buy a Swiss Pass)?

One last question is that SBB shows a ticket price to Schilthorn of about 30+ euros. But Schilthorn proper seems to advertise a much higher price (80+). I’m betting that SBB will just get you there, but Schilthorn will then charge an added entrance fee which is otherwise covered in the higher priced tickets mentioned. Do I have the right?

Thanks in advance for your help and guidance in this.

Hi TRP, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

    >>> we wondered if we could get off the bus at Trummelbach Falls on the way, touring the falls for about an hour, then catch the next bus on the way to Stechelberg to continue our journey.

    Yes, you can do that.

    >>> Then we wondered if we could stop in Murren for a visit before again continuing our journey to Schilthorn. Is this sort of thing possible with just the purchase of a full fare, regular ticket (and without having to buy a Swiss Pass)?

Yes, that is all permitted! However, if the Schilthorn is clear on top, I would not delay going up. As the day progresses, it is not uncommon for clouds to roll in and obscure the views. For that reason, you might also wish to postpone your visit to Trümmelbach Falls until after your Schilthorn (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schilthorn/) visit.

    >>> One last question is that SBB shows a ticket price to Schilthorn of about 30+ euros.

By default the Swiss timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/) shows half-price fares, as most Swiss have a Half Fare Card. So for the actual price, if you do not have a Swiss Half Fare Card, you need to double the price you see on SBB.

    >>> But Schilthorn proper seems to advertise a much higher price (80+). I’m betting that SBB will just get you there, but Schilthorn will then charge an added entrance fee which is otherwise covered in the higher priced tickets mentioned. Do I have the right?

No, there is no entrance fee. The Schilthorn site is showing you the actual full-fare price for transport.

You haven’t mentioned your travel date. If you are not travelling during the time the cable car and train from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren via Grütschalp are closed for maintenance, going to the Schilthorn via Grütschalp and Mürren and returning via Mürren, Gimmelwald and Stechelberg is a lovely way of doing the trip.

The maintenance/closure periods in 2024 for the Lauterbrunnen-Grütschalp-Mürren route are:

    • 06.05.24 – 08.05.24
    • 13.05.24 – 17.05.24
    • 21.05.24 – 31.05.24
    • 21.10.24 – 08.11.24

There is more information about Mürren and the Schilthorn on these pages:

    https://www.myswissalps.com/town/murren/

    Hope this clarifies things!

Thank you so much for your detailed answer. I had been trying for hours to find answers to these questions online without any clarity and much confusion. So thank you again! I also appreciate your recommendations about going to Schilthorn first if the weather is clear and visiting the falls on the way back as well as the alternate route mentioned. (The day we will be going is I believe the last day of the planned maintenance for the Grütschalp line. So we’ll need to travel via Stechelberg both directions.)

One last question: I know the general recommendation I have seen on the web is to wait until the day of our trip there to purchase tickets–to ensure the weather is clear. But I wondered if that risked tickets selling out or if getting tickets there could mean waiting in long lines or if it could create problems to buy tickets online without any way to print them out locally. Also, I am buying tickets for the whole group (6 of us). What do you think?

BTW This is a wonderful website! Thanks again for your help!

    Hi TRP,

    >>> One last question: I know the general recommendation I have seen on the web is to wait until the day of our trip there to purchase tickets–to ensure the weather is clear. But I wondered if that risked tickets selling out

Are you travelling in May? I can’t imagine tickets selling out in May, which is low season. The online booking system shows you how many “seats” are available, so you could keep an eye on that for your preferred date if you are concerned.  If anyone is going to miss out, it would be the people who arrive late in the day.

After checking the forecast, you could buy your tickets online the evening before (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schilthorn/#tickets), as mobile tickets are accepted. You might have to queue for the cable car once you arrive at the Stechelberg valley station and again at Mürren.

If you buy tickets beforehand and the Schilthorn is in the clouds, you won’t get a refund!

Hope that helps with your decision-making!
