Self-guided visits to Swiss cheese and chocolate factory

Short summary – read this first

Michelle is planning a trip to Lucerne, Wengen, Zermatt, Montreux, and Bern and wants to visit cheese and chocolate factories without joining guided tours. She's looking for suggestions on where to go for these experiences in the areas she's staying.

Key takeaways:
  • Visit the Gruyeres cheese factory and the chocolate factory in Broc for a great experience.
  • If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, your travel costs will be covered and you’ll get free entry to at least one chocolate factory.
  • Check out the Aeschbach ChocoWelt near Lucerne for a self-guided experience.
  • Consider visiting Chäserenholz cheese dairy if you're exploring Mt Rigi from Lucerne.

    Hello again Michelle.

I am not sure what you mean when you write ‘without a tour in any of those areas’.

You can study a good map of Switzerland.

From Montreux you could go first to Gruyeres for a cheese factory, and then go on to the chocolate factory at BROC, only a few kilometres away.  From Broc you could return to Montreux by a scenic route, changing trains at Romont (like Gruyeres a town with a still intact wall surrounding it). Palezieux and Vevey.

If you have invested in a Swiss Travel Pass, all the travel will be free, and you get free entry into (at least) the chocolate factory.  If you buy a Saver Day Pass all the travel will be free, but you will have to pay to visit the factories.

It would help us answer your questions, if you told us whether or not you are buying a Swiss Travel Pass.  If the answer to that question is ‘No, I am not buying a Swiss Travel Pass’ then I have another question.  Are you buying a Swiss Half Fare Card?

    Kind regards
    Roger

    Hi Michele,

Do check out the Aeschbach ChocoWelt near Lucerne. It’s in a place called Root, about 15 minutes by train from Lucerne. The standard admission fee includes an audio guide so you are basically on your own without a private guide.

If you are visiting Mt Rigi from Lucerne, you might want to visit the Chäserenholz cheese dairy, located about 20 mins scenic walk down from the top station of Rigi (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/rigi/).

You can find other suggestions for similar activities here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activities/culinary/

    Regards,
    Anna
