Day trip from Thun: Mülenen/Niesen Kulm or Niederhorn?

Short summary – read this first

Dick is planning a day trip from Thun and is deciding between Mülenen – Niesen Kulm and Niederhorn. He seeks advice on which option is better or if there are other recommendations, especially since they will be heading to Wengen afterwards.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking the Lotschberger mountain railway to Mülenen to enjoy Niesen on your way from Zermatt to Thun.
  • Stockhorn is another great nearby option worth exploring for a day trip from Thun.
  • If you plan to travel extensively by train, look into getting the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient travel options.

Good evening.  A quick question.  In finalizing our itinerary, I was wondering if anyone had a preference of going to Mülenen – Niesen Kulm or Niederhorn for a day trip from Thun?
After we leave Thun we are going to Wengen for a week, and will have arrived in Thun after visiting Zermatt, so I was looking to do something that was not a long train ride away.  Both the the mentioned excursions seem similar.  Just wondering of one is preferred or you have another suggestion.  Thank you.  Dick

    Hi Dick,

Here’s a suggestion: On the day you are travelling from Zermatt to Thun, if you have time, I recommend travelling on the Lotschberger mountain railway (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/lotschberg-mountain-railway/) and make a stop at Mulenen to visit Niesen (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/niesen/). You can then visit Niederhorn as a day trip from Thun.

    Best regards,
    Anna

    Hi Dick,

You also have Stockhorn which is not too far from Thun.  More details below.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda
