Day trip from Vevey – Gruyeres vs Rochers-de-Naye

Short summary – read this first

Anna is visiting Vevey for a full day and a half day, looking to explore either Gruyeres or Rochers-de-Naye in the morning, followed by a stroll through Lavaux vineyards. She also wants to walk the Montreux promenade to Chillon Castle before heading to Zermatt on Wednesday, but is curious if there's time to fit Rochers-de-Naye into her plans.

Key takeaways:
  • You can definitely add Rochers-de-Naye to your Wednesday itinerary if you manage your departure time well.
  • If you're more interested in scenery than factory tours, you might want to skip Gruyeres and Broc and stick to exploring Lavaux and its nearby viewpoints.
  • Local shops in Montreux offer good cheese and chocolate, so no need to visit factories if you're short on time.

    Hi there,

I will have one full day and one half or 3/4 day in Vevey. I know I’m trying to squeeze a lot in- but I will be jet-lagged so hoping I will be able to take advantage of the very early morning hours 🙂

Tomorrow (Tuesday 9/4) is my full day. I am hoping to either go up towards Gruyeres OR to Rochers-de-Naye in the morning, then walk through the Lavaux vineyards in the afternoon/evening. On Wednesday morning I would like to walk along the Montreux promenade to castle Chillon before traveling on to Zermatt.

    My questions:

    1) Would it be possible to add Rochers-de-Naye to the Wednesday agenda? I don’t have a departure time scheduled, but am hoping to leave Montreux to head to Zermatt in the early afternoon. I would be ok to drop castle Chillon from my itinerary if that would make this easier.

    2) If I do choose between Gruyeres and Rochers-de-Naye for Tuesday, which would you recommend? I’m actually less interested in the cheese/chocolate factories, and am more interested in visiting beautiful scenery/villages and eating the cheese and chocolate 🙂

    3) If I do go to the Gruyeres area, could you recommend an agenda? Beautiful towns/areas to stop along the way and take some nice walks/hikes (and eat cheese and chocolate of course).

I have read that Rochers-de-Naye is not worth it in poor weather, so everything is weather-dependent of course!

Thank you so much for all your help!!

    Anna

    Hi Anna,

    1. You can add in Rochers De Naye Wednesday yes. It really depends on what train you want to take to Zermatt that afternoon. You can use the timetable to find schedules to the mountain and to Zermatt: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable
    2. You can certainly find good cheese and chocolate at local shops in Montreux if that is what you are after. 🙂 I think then I’d go to the mountain instead. Though perhaps the weather that day will decide for you.
    3. If you want to do Gruyeres and Broc in the morning and then Lavaux in the afternoon I don’t think you have time for stopping at other towns or doing any hikes around Gruyeres. I’d be content exploring those 2 towns and the factories and then heading to the vineyards in the afternoon: http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/lutry-epesses

Thank you for your input Lucas! For #3, if I do decide to do something in the morning and Lavaux in the afternoon, is there any other excursion (outside of Rochers de Naye of course) that you would recommend? Or will Gruyeres and Broc still be scenic and fun to explore, even if I decide to not do any factory tours?

    Hi Anna,

When we were based near Vevey it took most of the day to visit the medieval town of Gruyères, the cheese factory, and the chocolate factory in Broc. If the factories don’t interest you I would completely skip them as you can buy cheese and chocolate anywhere. The walk from the train station to the town of Gruyères is nice but short. The town is very picturesque. I suppose you could visit it in the morning and the Lavaux area in the afternoon, but it’s not an ideal combination as it requires quite some traveling. Combining the Lavaux with a nearby viewing point (Les Pléiades or the tower at Mont Pèlerin) would be easier.
