Day trip suggestions from Weggis with 7 month old

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Cshannon314 is visiting Switzerland for 7 days this June with her husband and their 7-month-old baby. They're based in Weggis and looking for advice on day trips to Lucerne and Interlaken, as well as options for a lake boat ride, a scenic train ride, and a cog railway to a mountain top, keeping their baby in mind.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the gondola from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad and then the cogwheel train to reach the summit, which offers stunning views.
  • Consider getting a Swiss Half Fare Card to save on mountain and boat tickets, especially since you'll be doing multiple trips.
  • Avoid high altitudes above 2000-2500 m with your baby; short bursts of elevation are safer.
  • Enjoy lakeside activities like walking, steamers, and exploring the area around Weggis for a more relaxed experience.

I will be visiting Switzerland for 7 days this June with my husband and 7 month old baby. We rented a car from Zurich airport and are stationed in Weggis for the entire week. We are interested in a day trip to Lucerne and Interlaken, a lake boat ride, a short scenic train ride, and a cog railway to a mountain top. Can you give suggestions for each of these activities, keeping in mind that we will be traveling with a 7 month old? Thank you.

    Hi Cshannon314,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Weggis is a beautiful lakeside destination ideal for exploring Rigi and the Lake Lucerne region. There is a gondola that you can take from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad, which is well-known for its wellness facilities. From here you can take the cogwheel train to the top of Rigi. From Weggis, you can also take the paddle steamer or boat around the lake all the way to Lucerne. For more sightseeing options, see links below:

If you’re planning to drive, you might want to think about getting a Swiss Half Fare Card to avoid paying full-price tickets for all your mountain excursions and boat trips. You can find more information here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard

    Hi Cshannon314,

as you are going to travel with a baby, note that high level altitude (above 2000-2500 m) is not always recommended with a baby. Please consult with your doctor before your trip. See more practical information on this page under “Preparation”: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch.

Thank you for the information. We plan on visiting Rigi, which is just below 2000 m, and will only be staying for a short time.

Just sitting on the lake shore, walking, going on the steamers etc might be all you need to do. You can do the whole of the lake area easily starting and finishing in Weggis. There quite long walks that you can do along the lakeshore. For the Rigi I recommend the ‘all railway’ option, whereby you can do the circuit Weggis – Vitznau – Rigi – Arth Goldau – Kussnacht – Weggis (from Kussnacht is by local bus)

Here is a picture of a paddle steamer taken by me from the hotel in 2018. Vitznau can be seen above the boat and if you can see a Swiss flag on the rocks above Vitznau that is near to where the Vitznau – Rigi railway climbs up the mountain
