March road trip: Geneva-Interlaken-Grindelwald/Zermatt, roads ok?

Short summary – read this first

Dan is planning a quick trip with his partner in March to show her the beauty of Switzerland, starting from Geneva and heading to Interlaken, then either Grindelwald or Zermatt. He wants to know if the roads will be okay for driving and is looking for other suggestions for their itinerary.

Key takeaways:

Roads will be fine for driving in March, but remember Zermatt is car-free, so park in Täsch and take the train. Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass for discounts on trains and certain mountain transports, even if you're driving. Switzerland's public transport is efficient; trains run frequently and can be a great alternative to driving.

    Hey

Hope everyone’s well! I’m looking at taking my partner for a quick trip in march for her first experience of Switzerland as don’t have a lot of holiday time start of year!

I’m looking at hiring a car from Geneva and heading to interlaken then either to Grindelwald or Zermatt first then off to the other afterwards

Will the roads be ok? It looks mostly main roads on the planner and hire car comes with snow chains by the looks of it

Any other suggestions welcome, just a quick birthday trip to show her the beauty of this country

    thanks

    Hi Dan

If you look at a map of Switzerland Grindelwald (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/grindelwald/) is very close to Interlaken(https://www.myswissalps.com/town/interlaken/) and so can be visited on the way to Grindelwald.

Zermatt (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zermatt/) is traffic free and so you need to park at Täsch and catch a train to the village.

Have you considered using the very efficient public transport network in Switzerland? (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/train/how-it-works/)

There are also a number of travel passes available to consider once you have prepared your itinerary.

Some people buy a Swiss Half Fare Card (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/) even if travelling by car as it provides a discount on travel to destinations  that can only be reached by cog railway or cable car/gondola.

    Hope this is of help.

    Kind regards

    Jane

    Hi dan,

    Welcome to My Swiss Alps!

Roads will be fine in March. However note that Zermatt is a car-free area. To reach Zermatt, leave your car in Täsch and take the train.

You may also consider do the entire trip by train. (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/train-or-car/).  Trains in Switzerland are efficient, on the main line there is a train every 30 minutes, on secondary lines every hour. Seat reservation is not necessary (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/seat-reservation/).

    Enjoy your trip!

    Hi Dan,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

In addition to the helpful replies above. We have a driving guide that details all the necessary information with regards to driving here:

There are even some suggested car itineraries if you needed some additional ideas. In the traffic information section, you will also find a list of the main closures of the Swiss pass roads.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
