Eurail or Swiss Travel Pass Rust-Bern-Lake Como?

Short summary – read this first

Michelle and her family are planning a trip from Zurich on June 7 for two weeks, including visits to Europa-Park in Germany, and several locations in Switzerland and Italy. She wants advice on whether a Eurail Pass or Swiss Travel Pass is better for their itinerary and if their planned day trips are reasonable. The itinerary includes stops in Bern, Gruyeres, Zermatt, and Lake Como, with diverse activities in each location.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider using a detailed itinerary to calculate travel costs and determine the best pass for your needs.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass offers unlimited travel across the Swiss rail network and may be more beneficial for in-country travel than a Eurail Pass.
  • Make sure to verify the travel times for day trips to ensure they fit into your schedule.

Hi, My name is Michelle and my husband and two children (ages 17 and 23) will be arriving into Zurich from the US on June 7, 2022 and departing Zurich on June 21, 2022. Our plans are to visit Europa-Park in Rust, Germany; Switzerland, Milan and Lake Como, Italy. We were in Switzerland in 2019 and visited Zurich, Bern, Lucerne (Mt. Pilatus) and Lauterbrunnen. This is the itinerary I have planned for this visit and I am wondering if a Eurail Pass makes more sense than a Swiss Travel Pass. Does this look like a good itinerary and are these day trips reasonable? If anyone has other suggestions, please advise. Thank you everyone.

June 7 (2 nights in Rust, Germany) – Zurich Flughafen to Zurich HB; then Zurich HB to Ringsheim/Europa-Park

June 9 (5 nights in Bern) – Ringsheim/Europa Park to Bern

June 10 – Bern to Gruyeres and Maison Cailler

    June 11 – Bern to Glacier 3000

June 12 – Bern to Bahnhof-Zweissmen and take Golden Pass to Montreux. Visit Chateau de Chillon

    June 13 Bern to Zermatt

June 14 – Bern to Geneva

June 15 (3 nights in Geneva) – Geneva to Annecy, France

June 16 – Geneva to Chamonix, France

June 17 (3 nights in Carate Urio/Lake Como)- Geneva to Milan, Italy; then to Lake Como

June 20 (1 night in Zurich) – Lake Como to Zurich

    Hi Mengel058,

In my opinion, your current itinerary is doable. Based on your plans, a Eurail Global Pass might indeed be practical: https://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass. But if you want to make sure you are getting the best value, I recommend doing up a detailed itinerary and calculate the cost using our spreadsheet on this page: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna
