Eurail Pass vs Swiss Pass Switzerland and Italy

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Purvi is planning a trip to Switzerland with her husband and two kids from August 3rd to the 6th, starting in Zurich and visiting Interlaken before moving on to Italy. She needs advice on a rail pass that will work for Switzerland and Italy, including her journey to London.

Key takeaways:
  • The Eurail Global Pass is a great option as it covers travel in Switzerland, Italy, and even includes the journey to London if you travel by train.
  • For travel only within Switzerland, consider the Swiss Travel Pass which offers more excursions and mountain trips, but is limited to Switzerland.
  • It’s often recommended to start in Venice, then travel to Switzerland, and finally to London for a more enjoyable and eco-friendly experience.

My family ( me, husband and 2 kids) will be in Switzerland from canada – zurich – interlaken 3rd aug until 6th morning and than moving ahead to milan – lake como, than 9,10th in venice and 10th afternoon leaving for London. For this multi country trip is there any one pass which i can use in both Switzerland and italy and also for venice to london trip? Can you please advise. Thank you.

    Hi Purvi,

Welcome to MySwissAlps! The Eurail Global Pass covers Switzerland, Italy, and it even includes your trip to London if you travel by train: http://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass. In that case it would be better to start in Venice, then Switzerland, and finally to London via Paris. Definitely more interesting and eco-friendlier than flying!

Another pass option is the Swiss Travel Pass (SwissPass is for residents only): http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass. It includes more excursions like mountain trips, but only inside Switzerland.

The best choice depends on the details of your itinerary. Please see http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass to find out.

The best option for North American tourists visiting more than just Switzerland in one trip is usually Eurail, as indeed it has been since the 1970s. The Eurail pass covers all countries if you get the Global version, and within the Swiss part of your trip the Eurail pass gives quite good coverage with free travel on the main national network and discounts on many of the popular Swiss local and mountain lines
