From Zermatt to Lugano, is the travel time worth it?

Short summary – read this first

A couple is excited about their first 14-day trip to Switzerland, planning to visit Zurich, Bern, Grindelwald, Zermatt, Lugano, and Lucerne. They want to know if Lugano is worth the 5-hour train ride from Zermatt, as they prefer a relaxed travel style and plan to use the Swiss Travel Pass-Flexi for train rides.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider visiting Locarno instead of Lugano as a base, and do a day trip to Lugano from there.
  • The scenic Centovalli Railway from Zermatt to Locarno takes about 4.5 hours and offers beautiful views.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass is a great choice for your train journeys, providing flexibility and convenience.

    Greetings everyone!

    We are a couple planning our 1st visit to Switzerland for 14 days (yay!) and has mapped out a plan as follows: 1.ZRH, straight to 2.Bern – 3.Grindelwald – 4.Zermatt – 5.Lugano – 6.Lucerne – back to 7.Zurich.

The plan is to use the Swiss Travel Pass-Flexi for the train rides. We will base ourselves in all the places (2 to 7) listed and do day trips around them.

Both of us are of relaxed travelling style, prefering not to tightly pack our days, hence will stay at least 2 nights per stop, except for Lugano. Do you think Lugano is worth the 5 hr+ train ride from Zermatt? Added Lugano mainly for the feel of Italy haha.

    Thank you all in advance!

    Hi Yuzujess_link,

Welcome to MySwissAlps and thanks for sharing your travel plans.

It’s great that you want to include all the different Swiss regions in your itinerary. I personally think the Ticino region (https://www.myswissalps.com/region/ticino/) is worth visiting if you have time.

Maybe you should consider using Locarno as a base instead and just do a day trip Lugano.  You can find information about Locarno here: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/locarno/

There are regular train services between Locarno and Lugano and the journey takes roughly 30 mins.

From Zermatt, you can take the scenic Centovalli Railway via Domodossola to Locarno (about 4.5 hrs journey). Further details on how to plan this scenic trip here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/centovalli-railway/

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

Thank you Anna for the information!

We really appreciate the suggestion for Lorcano (you are the 2nd person who suggested this town!) and how to get there from Zermatt. Hope the weather there is good during Autumn.
