Hi Toronto Travel.
Welcome to MySwissAlps.
Frutigen is a good base to explore the Bernese Oberland especially Kandersteg and Adelboden. It is a key stop on the Lotschberg mountain railway line (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/lotschberg-mountain-railway/). This means you also have direct train services to Thun, Bern and Brig — all good starting points to many wonderful sightseeing and hiking. It is also possible to do a day trip to Interlaken (about 1 hour train ride with a change in Spiez).
If you are planning to specifically explore the Jungfrau region (https://www.myswissalps.com/region/jungfrau-region/) for more than 1 day, I do recommend choosing a base in the region itself to minimise transit time.
Regards,
Anna

Hello Toronto Travel
I would strongly support Anna’s advice.
I am however puzzled by your reference to ‘Not needing to rent a car would be nice.’ Switzerland has the best public transport system in the world, so wherever you stay, you will not need to ‘rent a car’.
Indeed there are many places in Switzerland which cannot be reached by private car. In the Bernese Oberland, to get to Murren you have to take a cable car; to Wengen it is a cog-wheel railway.
You also say ‘Will be arriving from Luzern and departing to Lausanne’. That suggests you are doing quite a lot of travelling within Switzerland. That in turn suggests to me that you should be considering investing in a Swiss Travel Pass. (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/). The STP gives you free travel on all Swiss public transport (Buses, streetcars, lake boats and trains) except lines which simply go up mountains. (The STP will take you free to Wengen and Murren, but on lines going above those villages you will have to pay a (discounted) fare.)
You also refer to ‘if raining Plan B activitities.’ If it rains in Luzern, the STP will (for example) take you free to the Italian speaking canton of Ticino. If it rains in Frutigen, the STP will take you to BERN (only 50 minutes on the hourly train). If it rains in Lausanne, a trip to Geneva is very easy. You should also note that the STP gives free entry to a lot of museums….
Best wishes for your detailed planning
Roger

Thanks Anna for great info, we may modify accomodation to 2 days in Frutigen and 2 days in Gimmelwald/Lauterbrunnen/Murren to minimize travel time.

Thanks Roger for the detailed info. We likely won’t need or plan to rent a car for our stay. Great info on Swiss Travel Pass, I was going to look into the various passes but you gave some great info regarding uses and value of STP. We will be starting our trip in Zurich and working our way toward Chamonix and ending up in Lyon. About 20 days spacing it out. We may modify accomodation to 2 days in Frutigen and 2 days in Gimmelwald/Lauterbrunnen/Murren to minimize travel time and the STP would be an asset as you mentioned. Those cloudy/rainy day plans are good to have in our back pocket.

Hi Dave,
Here are some of my favourite rainy-day alternatives if the weather isn’t ideal for hiking or mountain excursions:
-
Boat cruises on Lake Thun (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/boat-lake-thun/) or Lake Brienz (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/boat-lake-brienz/) – a relaxing way to enjoy the scenery even in misty weather
-
Explore caves or gorges, such as St. Beatus Caves, Trümmelbach Falls, or the Grindelwald Glacier Canyon
-
Wellness time, including a spa visit or sauna session
-
Indoor food experiences, like a chocolate-making workshop or a cheese tasting (https://www.myswissalps.com/activities/culinary/)
Hope this helps!
Anna
