A traveler named MaxLes is looking for the best and cheapest way to get from Geneva Airport to the train station late at night, aiming to catch the first train to Lauterbrunnen early the next morning. They want to avoid spending on a hotel for just a few hours of sleep and are seeking advice on transport options and travel passes.
Key takeaways:
You cannot stay at the airport overnight; consider finding a nearby hotel or hostel.
The Swiss Travel Pass covers many forms of transport, including free trains from the airport to the city center.
Tickets for airport trains are available for free using machines at customs, allowing you to save your travel pass for the next day.
Review the rail pass comparison sheet to determine if the Swiss Travel Pass or a Jungfrau region pass is more cost-effective for your plans.
Look for a 24-hour café or waiting area in Geneva to spend time before your early train.

Just a quick question re the best/cheapest way to travel from Geneva Airport to the Train Station to go from Geneva to Lauterbrunnen. We land late in the evening around 11pm and want to go to the train station straight from the airport so we can hang around there and then get the first train from the train station to Lauterbrunnen so we don’t have to stay overnight in Geneva and pay for a hotel room for just a few hours sleep. What is the best/cheapest way to get from the airport to the train station please? It looks like there are trains and buses, do you know the cost as well?
You can take a train from Geneva airport to Lauterbrunnen (with 1 or 2 changes). To get the schedules for your date of travel, use the Swiss railways timetable here.
Are you planning on buying a Swiss Travel Pass or Half-Fare card for your train trips? They are usually the best option if you are taking more than a couple train trips in Switzerland.

Please note that you can’t stay at the airport. It will be closed during the night. There are affordable hotels near the airport and in Geneva itself. Please see:
There is a train station at the airport. Trains to the town center are free with the Swiss Travel Pass mentioned by Lucas. If you don’t have one you can get a free ticket as explained on myswissalps.com/airpor ts/geneva.
Thanks for the responses, they are much appreciated. The problem we have is that we land at around 11pm at night and want to catch the earliest train possible to Wengen on Sat 15 July, so we really don’t want to book a room just for a few hours as we will be leaving again early in the morning as I think the earliest train is around 5am, so we just wanted somewhere to sit for a few hours until we can catch the train that is why we were thinking of leaving the airport and waiting at the train station until the first train goes at that time, is that possible or is there a late night cafe or somewhere that we can wait in until we can catch the early train?
The other thing we really aren’t sure what to do is the travel pass and which one to buy. The only real train ticket we need to buy is from Geneva to Wengen and then we are in Wengen for a full 3 days and want to see as much as possible while we are there. So we don’t know whether to get a Swiss Travel Pass or to get a Jungfrau region pass and pay for the train tickets from Geneva to Wengen, any advice would be gratefully received
I don’t know of any options open 24 hours for you to hang out in. You maybe best served by staying in a hotel or hostel for the night and perhaps exploring Geneva a little in the morning before rushing off to Lauterbrunnen?
To be sure on the best pass you should take a look at our page on how to choose the best rail pass. There is an excel sheet there that will help you do the math on passes vs. point to point tickets.
The Swiss Travel Pass may well be worth it if you are planning on using public transit in the Wengen area as well as a train or gondola or two. The STP covers virtually all transport in Switzerland.
Thanks for that. All our accommodation is booked in Wengen so that is where we want to spend most of our time as that is the area we want to see and we will have time to spend in Geneva when we return to fly out so that is the main reason for wanting to get to Wengen as early as possible. We will get to Geneva and have a look around and see if we can find somewhere that is open a 24 hour cafe or something fingers crossed anyway!!!! Okay thanks we will take a look at the spreadsheet for the passes, we think we will using public transport and definitely want to try a cable car or gondola I am sure .
Hello MaxLes. No-one appears to have mentioned that travel from Geneva Airport to Geneva main rail station is free. Tickets are available from a machine in the baggage hall just before you go through Customs. So you would not need to waste a day of your travel pass – it could begin the next day. I hope this helps.
