Ralph and his spouse are traveling to Switzerland in September, landing in Geneva and heading to Zermatt for several days. They're looking for the easiest way to get from Geneva airport to Zermatt, considering both train options and the cost of a private transfer.
Key takeaways:
Taking the train from Geneva airport to Zermatt is straightforward, with only one change in Visp, making it easy for older travelers.
My spouse and I will be traveling in September. Our flight will land early AM in Geneva. We then plan to go on to Zermat for several days, then the Glacier Express to St Moritz and the Bernina Express to Tirano.
What is the easiest – emphasize easy for two older but able folks – to get from the Geneva airport to Zermat. A private transfer is a bit pricey but has the luxury of ease, maybe even some views on the way to Tasch. Is the train to Tasch then shuttle E A S Y or a lot of twists and turns before you get your seat.

Hi Ralph,
The train from Geneva airport to Zermatt should be fairly straightforward and easy for you. There is only 1 change of trains in Visp on this 4 hour trip. It would be the next best option other than the more expensive (vastly I would bet) private transfer.

It looks like you have misunderstood the Swiss railway system, or read about Täsch in the wrong context. Täsch is the limit of the road for most travellers, so there is a huge car park and a shuttle service.
Täsch is irrelevant if you are travelling from Geneva Airport (Genève Aéroport) to Zermatt by public transport. You certainly shouldn’t need a private transfer.
Just board one of the twice per hour interregio trains Genève Aéroport – Brig. They depart at xx.02 and xx.20 past each hour. The xx.02 departure is a slightly faster service to Visp so the overall journey is a touch quicker.
Change at Visp on to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) narrow gauge train to Zermatt
Thanks for the clarifications. I have done a bit more research. l saw a video of walking thru the Geneva airport and boarding the train to Visp. Got more info on the train from there to Tasch and the way we would get to the hotel.
All good and it looks really EASY. Can do. BUT, the price for tickets on the train to accomplish this turn out to be $325 for two senior discounted fares. The cost of a sedan (Class E) from GetTransfer in USD is $345 to Tasch. My spouse is doing more research about the reliability of the firm for the transfer, but all things being equal, i would probably opt for the car.

Hi Ralph,
Personally I wouldn’t book the car in this case. You need to change to a train in Täsch anyway (tickets are CHF 8.20 per person one way). All the way by train is also only one change, in Visp. Apart from that: you’ve planned more train trips and probably sightseeing by cable cars as well, so a train pass will save you money. With a Swiss Travel Pass, the transfer from Geneva to Zermatt would be fully included, as well as the Glacier Express and Bernina Express (apart from the seat reservations). With a Swiss Half Fare Card you’d pay half the normal fare. Both options also get you 50% off cable cars in Zermatt.
