Getting from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen & Grindelwald

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning an 8-day trip to Switzerland in February for a group of five. They want to know if the train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen and Grindelwald is free with the Swiss Travel Pass, as they are concerned about timing after arriving in Interlaken at noon.

Key takeaways:
  • The train trip from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen and Grindelwald is free with the Swiss Travel Pass as long as you don't go via Kleine Scheidegg.
  • With the Swiss Travel Pass, you receive a 50% discount on the cable car and gondola from Wengen to Männlichen and down to Grindelwald.
  • If you travel between Wengen and Grindelwald via Zweilütschinen, it is free, while traveling via Kleine Scheidegg gives you a 25% discount.

Hi all. There are 5 of us visiting next February and we plan to buy the 8 day Swiss Travel Pass. Would like to ask if Travel Pass holders need to pay to travel to train from Lauterbunnen to Wengen & Grindelwald then back to Lauterbunnen?According to the Passes validity map, it’s on dotted line, hence it is not covered? As we will only reach Interlaken at noon, it might be too rush to head for Top of Europe (though we plan to try..), so we would like to spend the rest of the day visiting Wengen and Grindelwald if so. Thank you.

    Hi Uallin,

The train trip from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen or Grindelwald is free with the Swiss Travel Pass (as long as you don’t go via Kleine Scheidegg).

If you are looking at the black dotted line near Wengen, that is the cable car from Wengen to Männlichen and the gondola from Männlichen down to Grindelwald. With the Swiss Travel Pass, you get 50% discount on both.

The red dotted lines are the train routes from Wengen and Grindelwald to the Jungfraujoch via Kleine Scheidegg, for which you get a 25% discount.

If you travel from Wengen to Grindelwald via Kleine Scheidegg (or vice versa), you get a 25% discount, but if you travel between those two places via Zweilütschinen, it is free.
