    Hello,

We are planning a trip to Switzerland in the second week of April, and two of our main objectives are to ride the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express. I understand the weather in April is iffy, and many of the other mountain trains are closed. However, I was wondering if anyone may be able to give us some idea about what to expect in terms of weather and landscape-viewing during the 2nd week of April to mid April along the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express routes. Will most of the routes be snow covered or will there be some mix of green and snow.

    Thank you for any insights.

Hello Icse77 and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Mountain trains may be closed for maintenance for periods between the Winter and Summer tourist seasons.

The Glacier and Bernina Express trains will both operate and you should get a mix of travelling through greenery (at lower altitudes and especially towards Tirano) and snow covered landscapes.

    Make your seat reservations:

Based on your personal itinerary you should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. The spreadsheet also includes links to the “Where it’s valid” page for all available passes. Be sure to check those pages for each pass you are considering. Study the map AND read all the text on those pages to fully understand what is covered by the respective pass.

    For checking timetables see http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/checking-train-timetables.

    Mix of green and snow.

Many of my holidays are in April (because its Easter) so I can assure you I know that the above is correct!

Unfortunately there is lots of green even today 23 February (global warming is here…)
