I have 10 days to travel from Venice to Geneva in early October and was planning to get a rail pass and explore the most scenic Swiss routes. There are so many beautiful options forming a spider web of trains and layover towns that I was hoping someone knowledgeable would be so kind as to offer some advice. Is it reasonable to ride the Glacier and Bernina Express, as well as the Golden Pass in just 10 days?

    Hi Asaldanha,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Yes, it’s possible to travel on the Glacier Express, Bernina Express and Golden Pass in 10 days. Here is sample independent itinerary to give you ideas on how combine multiple panoramic train trips: http://www.myswissalps.com/plantrip/doityourself/sampleitineraries/ultimateswissscenictrains

I consider this a reasonable thing to do. I would suggest getting from Venice to Tirano, Italy and then riding the Bernina Express to St. Moritz (or perhaps only to Pontresina, as many suggest it’s a nicer place to spend time than St. Moritz). Pontresina is just a few minutes away from St. Moritz. Then take the Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt. Then after spending some time there, take regular trains from Zermatt to Spiez. Then ride the GoldenPass from Spiez to Montreux. By only going to Spiez, you will be missing a small portion of the GoldenPass route between Interlaken and Spiez. You could go from Zermatt to Interlaken to line up with the start of the GoldenPass route, but you would then be backtracking from Interlaken to Spiez. I’m not sure it is worth doing that. But perhaps.

Then finish your trip by going from Montreux to Geneva.

You can decide how many nights you wish to spend in each location between your train rides.

Thanks. Appreciate the advice. My dilemma seems to be at the beginning, getting from Venice to Tirano or any other point on the Bernina Express without a long multi bus ride or going to Milan and then goin north and backtracking to the east. Maybe I’m too focused on the map 🙂

    Hi Asaldanha,

You could also go from Venice via Milan to Lugano and pickup the Bernina Express bus to Tirano from there. Not necessarily faster but it’s an alternative. It’s either that or all trains to Tirano.
