    Hello,

We will be traveling to Geneva in March, and at the end of our of trip, would like to take a nice scenic train ride from Geneva to Zurich, we will have four pieces of luggage between two people. I’ve been reading that the GoldenPass is a good option.

    How does that work exactly?

Will we need to change platforms?

What is the travel time, and will it be too much with suitcases?

    Are there restrooms available?

Also, are there any 4/5 star hotels that you would recommend in Zurich?

    Thanks!

Hello Renae and Welcome to MySwissAlps

The full Golden Pass route (http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass) from Geneva to Zurich will take you 7 and a half hours. You will join the Golden Pass route at Montreux and continue via Zweisimmen, Interlaken Ost and Luzern and change trains at all those stations.

There are restrooms at all station and on all trains.

    See also http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/luggage.

By comparison the fastest route between Geneva and Zurich is direct (no change of train) and takes 2 hours 41 minutes. There are other permutations involving parts of the Golden Pass route which offer varying travel times and number of changes.

If you were willing to leave Geneva around 7:30 you could travel to Brig and join the Glacier Express to Chur and from there go to Zurich. Duration about 8 hours 15 mins.

For hotels in Zurich see http://www.myswissalps.com/zurich/hotels.

    Hi Renae –

Supplementing Rockoyster’s comments, you will probably find these links helpful while you are in Switzerland:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/travel/inswitzerland,

    specifically:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/train, and:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

If you look up a specific journey, the timetable will show you which platforms are used by the arriving and departing trains at each station. Usually, there will be a station map showing the platform layout, as well.

There will be room for your luggage on the train, however there are some options for sending some or all of your luggage ahead:

An app for a mobile phone is available at the main SBB website:

    Hi Renae,

Supplementing Slowpoke’s comments you can find the SBB app he referred to here. I recommend it highly for anyone travelling or planning to travel around Switzerland.

Which lead me to ponder what your “trip” consists of in your “We will be traveling to Geneva in March, and at the end of our of trip . . . .”

Thanks for these, all very helpful.I We’ll be in Verbier for a corporate ski trip.

We will be staying in Verbier. On our checkout day, we want to take a nice scenic train to Bern, where we’ll spend a few days. From what I’ve read, Verbier is not near a main road or train line. So, how do we get from Verbier to Bern? Should we still take the Golden Pass route? Which platform should we plan to depart from?

The nearest train station to Verbier is Le Châble. You will get a bus or cable way to there.

It is about 3 hours to Bern or a bit under 5 and a half if you follow the Golden Pass (via Montreux and Zweisimmen).

Several options (as usual in Switzerland)

All start the same: Verbier – Le Chable (bus or cable car); Le Chable – Martigny (St Bernard Express local train)

    then:

    • Martigny – Brig – Kandersteg – Spiez – Thun – Bern
    • Martigny – Montreux – Golden pass – Zweisimmen – Bern
    • Martigny – Montreux – Montbovon – Gruyeres – Bulle – Bern
