GoldenPass: upgrade Saver Day Pass to 1st class?

Short summary – read this first

A family of 5 is planning a day trip in mid-December from Interlaken to Montreux and Zermatt. They need advice on whether they can upgrade their Saver Day Passes to 1st class on the spot and whether it's worth reserving 2nd class seats to sit together, as they will be traveling with luggage. They want to ensure a smooth journey.

Key takeaways:
  • You can upgrade from 2nd to 1st class at any time, either via the SBB app or at a station, and the cost will be half the difference in fare for the adults.
  • If you prefer to ensure sitting together, you can reserve 2nd class seats, which is advisable if you want peace of mind during busy travel times.

Hello. We are a family of 3 adults and 2 children. For a day trip Interlaken – Montreux – Zermatt, we have purchased (from Happy Rail), Saver Day Passes 2nd class with Half Fare Card/ Family Car).

On hindsight, we could have purchased 1st class Saver Day Passes, since we will be travelling with luggage in a group.

As the Saver Day pass is not exchangeable, I would like to enquire if the following options are valid:

    – For the Golden Pass route, am I able to upgrade to 1st class cabin on the spot via SBB app? (if we are not able to find seats together in 2nd class cabins). Is the top-up equal to the cost difference between 2nd class ½ fare and 1st class fare 1/2 fare for the 3 adults only?

    – Second option is to pay for reserved 2nd class seats on the Golden Pass to ensure sitting together, although I understand seat reservation is not mandatory.

Travelling in mid-December. Would like to hear views on above. Thank You.

    Hello familyhol5,

Nice plans :-). That’s great you have secured the Saver Day Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card and the Swiss Family Card for your day out.

For your 2nd class Saver Day Passes, should you wish to upgrade to 1st, this is totally doable. (That said you’ll find if you remain in 2nd, it should be totally fine too. Mid December should not be that busy, typically the 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year will be busier). Further details can be found below:

An upgrade costs half of the difference between the 2nd and 1st class fare for the route you wish to travel. This can be carried out yes via the app or either at a rail station, ticket machine, online or even onboard (though I’d actually do it beforehand, just to be safe).

Luggage wise, there are designated areas within the trains for storing. Further details here:

In regard to reservations, of course if you wanted a piece of mind and to make sure you are all sat together in 2nd, reservations on the GoldenPass can be purchased. More information here:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
