I am planning a trip to Zermatt in last week of August and plan to see both Gornergrat and Matterhorn in one day. We will not be hiking at all. Can I get Peak Pass and cover both in one day? Which one to visit 1st? I read I can take Riffelberg exp mid way to cover both and save time instead of going down to Zermatt and then go to the next. Can someone guide me how to cover both? Thanks

    Hi veep,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Visiting Gornergrat and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise in the one day, you are best to purchase the Peak2Peak ticket unless you are in Zermatt for a few days and wish to visit Gornergrat, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Sunnegga-Rothorn more than once, then the Peak Pass would be better value.

You can read more on both in our Zermatt guide.  You’ll also find the route suggestion for the Peak2Peak ticket.  Scroll to All about the “Peak2Peak ticket” in the link below.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

    Hi Veep!

Unfortunately, the Riffelberg Express only operates from 26 June to 17 August 2025:

So it won’t be available during the last week of August, and you can’t use a Peak2Peak Ticket either. It’s still doable to visit both mountains in one day though, if you start early. I’d do Gornergrat first and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise next; that gets you the best sunlight for Matterhorn views and pictures.

Will you be having a rail pass? Several passes provide a 50% discount on return tickets to both Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise:

    Hello veep,

In 2018, I had perfect weather and went to the Glacier Parsdise around noon. This was the second week in September, not too far after your planned trip. I spent some time there, took photos, and since it was after the Riffelberg connection, I did go back into Zermatt and (after having a sausage on my way to the Gornergrat), I spent the next few hours up on the Gornergrat. While I agree with Annika, in so far as better photos and such of the Matterhorn, I was able to see the sun setting beyond, and it was a beautiful experience to see the sun setting beyond the shoulder of the Matterhorn. Either way, you can see both on the same day. I had the Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/), and both destinations were 50% discounted.
Again, whichever direction you choose, you won’t be disappointed (as long as the weather cooperates). Hava a great trip.

    Regards,

    Danielsan
