Rob and his wife are visiting Grindelwald for 3 days after skiing in Zermatt. They were excited to hike but learned that many trails will be closed in April and are looking for alternative activities to enjoy the scenery instead. Since they are fit and in their 30s, they want to make the most out of their trip without skiing again.
Key takeaways:
Check out local links for alternative activities in Grindelwald and nearby areas to plan your days.
Always confirm the status of trails and activities locally upon arrival, as conditions can vary greatly in spring.
Explore lower-altitude regions like Ticino or the Appenzeller Alps for more reliable hiking options during this time.

My wife and I will be visiting Grindelwald for 3 full days (not including travel days) from the 11/04/2019 until 15/04/2019. We will be coming to Grindelwald after finishing 10 days of skiing in Zermatt. We had the intention of seeing the scenery that Grindelwald has to offer and wanted to do the First Cliff Walk and Eigergletscher Trail. After doing more research, we have come to realise that the area will be shutdown and not suitable for hiking. We would like to ask what we could potentially replace those hiking activities with. We were very keen on hiking to experience some of the green mountain scenes that Switzerland is renowned for and since we would have spent 10 days skiing, we would not want to do any more skiing.
If it helps to suggest alternatives, we are in our 30s and fit.
You will find hikes in all of these links. Keep an eye on the altitudes, however, and look here to get an idea of the weather you can expect (whereas this is a little difficult to generalise): – http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king

Sorry for the late reply Steph, it took me 3 days to fully digest all the links you sent me, they were great and loaded with information.
In general, I am still unsure what can and can’t be done in April. Most particulary with First cliff walk, I am getting conflicting information with official sources and plenty of people stating it would be closed, but I also see people on traveladvisor stating they went in april and it was in fact, open.
I think I will just end up asking the local hotel management when I arrive in Grindelwald, I am sure there would be enough activities to fill 3 days pretty easily.
We’re having quite a warm winter so far (spring has come early, I saw daffodils today), so it may be that you’re in luck with Grindelwald.
However, if your plans are flexible, I would suggest that from Zermatt, you could go to Ticino, which has some wonderful warmer weather and hiking, and one of the most beautiful parts of Switzerland: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti cino
Or alternatively the Jura mountains which are also at lower elevations extending from near Basel all the way to Geneva. There is some stunning scenery around Neuchatel and Fribourg for example.
As stated by the other members, some destinations have to decide when to open which activity according to the weather.
The cable car to Mount First will be running normally, as you can see by using the timetable links. http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable (use advanced timetable for your search)
I think your idea of asking locally is a good advise in any case as the weather is in charge of some decisions in the mountains. Keeping an eye on the weather for further detailed yourself is recommendable, too. Use this link: http://www.myswissalps.com/we ather/forecast
