Grindelwald Terminal or Station for First/Jungfrau

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to the Swiss Alps and is confused about which station to use for visiting Grindelwald First and Jungfraujoch. They need to know if they can visit both places in one day and which one is more recommended, considering other planned visits to Zermatt, Mt Rigi, and Mt Titlis.

Key takeaways:
  • For Grindelwald First, alight at Grindelwald station and take a bus or walk to the gondola lift station.
  • To reach Jungfraujoch, get off at Grindelwald Terminal for the Eiger Express.
  • You can visit both Jungfraujoch and First on the same day by planning your route carefully, starting with Jungfraujoch in the morning.
  • Use the Swiss Travel Pass for discounts; it's 25% off for trips between Wengen/Grindelwald and Jungfraujoch.

    Hi

I got a little confused over the stations – Grindelwald Terminal vs Grindelwald.

    1. If we are going to First (Grindelwald) from Interlaken Ost, we should alight at Grindelwald station to go to Grindelwald Firstbahn gondola lift station to take the gondola?

    2. f we are going to Jungfraujoch from Interlaken Ost, we should alight at Grindelwald Terminal to take Eiger Express?

Are we able to visit Jungfraujoch in the morning and First (Grindelwald) in the afternoon on the same day? If not, which will be a more recommended place, considering we will be also visiting Zermatt (Matterhorn Glacier), Mt Rigi, Mt Titlis during our trip.

    Hi CharC!

    1. Correct, travel to Grindelwald Station (simply called “Grindelwald” in the timetable: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable) and then take a bus or walk to the First valley station: https://www.myswissalps.com/grindelwaldfirst/gettingthere.

    2. Correct, the Eiger Express leaves from Grindelwald Terminal: https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere.

There are many options to combine a Jungfraujoch trip in the morning with other activities in the afternoon. First is definitely one of them. In that case I’d recommend traveling up to Jungfraujoch via Wengen and Lauterbrunnen, then down via Eiger Express to Grindelwald for your trip to First. That way you get to experience a more diverse route from and to Jungfraujoch. All details are here: https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere.

Visiting Männlichen would be an option too: https://www.myswissalps.com/mannlichen. You could even start with that, then make the pretty hike to Kleine Scheidegg (https://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/maennlichen-kleinescheidegg) and then continue to Jungfraujoch.

    Hi Annika

    traveling up to Jungfraujoch –

    a. via Wengen and Lauterbrunnen will be like: [Interlaken Ost] => [Lauterbrunnen] => [Kleine Scheidegg] =>[Eigergletscher] => [Jungfraujoch].

    b. via Eiger Express from Grindelwald Terminal to Eiger Glacier station.

Travel either way, the price to reach the top is the same, at 25% off with Swiss Pass?

Also, if we were to choose either Jungfraujoch or First, which will you recommend?

    Hi CharC,

Yes, the price is the same for each route: https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/tickets. They’re free until Wengen/Grindelwald, and 25% discounted between Wengen/Grindelwald and Jungfraujoch with your Swiss Travel Pass: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity.

Jungfraujoch and First are very different experiences. It depends on your personal preferences. If you want to be high up in the mountains and in the snow, Jungfraujoch would be better. I think it’s a very special experience to get that high and enjoy the wide views over the snow-capped Alps and the Aletsch glacier. But that could be different for you. First would be cheaper and has lots of fun activities. You can best compare for yourself:
