Hello Jeckie and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Could we have a little more information about your overall plans. This question is difficult to answer in isolation.

Gruyères is a common day trip from Montreux.

Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

Hi! Yes sorry. We plan to do 6 nights. Lucerne (2) Interlaken (2), Zürich (1). My fiancé really wants to do Gruyeres. And I am trying to figure out what’s a good location to stay I’m so that we can go there

Cities closest to Gruyères are Lausanne, Fribourg, Bern. However Switzerland is a small country and if you use the fastest routes you can get to Gruyères fairly easily from Interlaken (via Bern) and from a few other places as well (including Zurich).

I don’t know of a Marriott in Gstaad.

    Hi Jeckle10952,

A day trip to Gruyères is perfectly doable from Gstaad, about 1 to 1.5 hours one way. But if you have to change hotels just for this day trip then a I’d consider staying in Interlaken as planned and do it from there. The only issue is that you only have two nights in Interlaken. Personally I would focus on things to see in that region: http://www.myswissalps.com/in terlaken/activities. Or, skip Interlaken and stay the 2 nights closer to Gruyères. Montreux is another option, a bit further than Gstaad but beautifully located on Lake Geneva: http://www.myswissalps.com/mo ntreux. This hotel is Marriott too I think: http://www.hotelscombined.com /Hotel/Grand_Hotel_Sui sse_Majestic.html. It’s across the train station so very easy to reach.

@arno. Yes we would stay a night somewhere just for this so I’m wondering if it’s worth changing hotels plus the travel to the city town and back. If the travel is possible I may add on another day to Interlaken or try to add another night to our stay

    My rule of thumb is:

    • More nights is better, as you won’t get bored easily in Switzerland. There is a lot to do and see.
    • Less base towns is better, as it takes a lot of time to pack/unpack and check out and into hotels.

So in your case I’d probably add a night to Interlaken and do this trip from there, or swap Interlaken for Montreux, but I would not add another base. In the end it’s up to you of course 🙂
