Hello,

My husband and I will be arriving 12:50 at Interlaken Ost on May 9 on Golden Pass train.  We will be staying in Wilderswil for 3 nights.  And then in Gimmelwald for two nights, May 12-14.  We are active adults age 56 and 61.  We would like to spend most of our time outdoors hiking.  We also enjoy bike riding. Please help with any suggestions for this time of year.  We will have Swiss Travel Pass.  We are considering Schilthorn and possible day trip to Lake Oeschinensee.  Suggestions for specific hiking trails are very welcome.  And any recommendations for rainy day activities.

Wilderswil is just a short train ride to Interlaken and the starting point of many excursions and activities. In May, I recommend taking boat trips on Lake Brienz (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/boat-lake-brienz/) and walk from Giessbach to Iseltwald (https://www.myswissalps.com/blog/hike-giessbach-iseltwald/). Then you might want to continue with an excursion to Harder Kulm https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/harder-kulm/).

You can also do boat trips on Lake Thun (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/boat-lake-thun/) and combine your cruise with hiking in Niederhorn or in Sigriswil.

Thanks for all these helpful suggestions!  We will be doing a boat tour on the Gotthard Panorama Express earlier in our trip.  Would you still recommend the Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in addition to that lake trip?

Hi AmyH,

That’s nice you will experiencing the Gotthard Panorama Express.  Just in case you were not aware the train portion has 1st class only, so an upgrade will be necessary if you are traveling on a 2nd class Swiss Travel Pass.  Seat reservations are necessary too.  Here’s our guide to the Gotthard Panorama Express:

As for additional boat trips on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.  If you wanted to experience different scenery, it could be nice to take another boat ride on either one.  Perhaps take a read of the attached thread which discusses the differences and that may help you decide to opt for another one or do something different altogether.
